GPT Everywhere: A Solo Entrepreneur's Journey to Profit With Help of AI

It all started as a personal passion project. I still remember like yesterday the first time I used ChatGPT and thought, this will change everything! I abandoned almost all other projects and dove deeply into the world of generative AI.

I wanted to better understand how GPT models and APIs worked, and quite quickly became frustrated by the limitations of the ChatGPT website at the time - no file uploads, custom instructions, and settings, and had a significantly restricted context length compared to what the API could offer. It was clear to me that I could create something better.

So I started tinkering with Python and then moved to Electron.js to build a basic first version of an app that gave me more control over how I interacted with GPT. I was building this tool for myself, adding features one by one with GPT's help. I had no knowledge of Electron or Node.js but GPT was my private mentor. Over many long nights of coding fueled by coffee and chatting with GPT, GPT Everywhere took shape. I would estimate that over 80% of its code is AI generated, which is nothing short of mind blowing!

This was a passion project for me. But then quickly I realized this could be useful for other small business owners too. I started posting my development journey publicly on Twitter and Reddit. Submitted the first version to Gumroad and got my first sales almost immediately! There was a clear demand for a desktop AI assistant - one that gave people more control over their experience and helped them save time on everyday tasks like content writing and coding.

That validation drove me to keep improving the app. Now, after surpassing $2000 in revenue, GPT Everywhere has become an indispensable tool I use daily for all my work. I have canceled my ChatGPT subscription and use models only through the app.

The journey has been immensely rewarding. Building new products has never been so much fun! Solo entrepreneurs need to wear so many hats from developing to marketing, and AI has been an enormous boost to my weekly productivity. It's also a nice digital companion while I work alone in my home office.
