Have you tried to start a SAAS in an industry you were not familiar with? How did it go?

This past few weeks I have been spinning my wheels trying to find a new business idea.

Everyone says to try and scratch your own itch when it comes to ideas. The problem I run into is that every itch I have is already super competitive.

However, when I look at other industries I can see some pretty crappy software. For example, almost all animal shelter software looks like crap.

The problem is that I don't have any connections and I know very little about animal shelters.

So has anyone tried to work their way into an industry without much connection before hand? If so, how did it turn out?
