How did you market your product pre-launch?

I always read about people saying to market your idea before you are ready to launch, but I'm having writer's block with it.

I have a landing page with a form you can fill out to join a waiting list. I plan on using this to reach out when I'm in Beta and again when the product is live.

I'm stumped on how to go about this though. Do I just pretend like it is ready? Specifically call out it isn't ready? Something else?

Does anyone have an example of how this is usually done?

I'm very far from an expert, but I read something about this.
    The advice was something like:

    1. Create your social media accounts.
    2. Start sharing updates to these accounts.

I think another brilliant idea is to join Facebook groups, or something, and start sharing memes (yeah, they're stupid, but they're easily shareable), knowledge about your product, useful things related to your niche, etc. (EDIT: Post to your page, share to the groups). All from your product's personal Facebook page. Thus, when you launch, some communities have seen you around, people have liked your pages, etc. So, now on launch day, you have people who are familiar with your brand/product. Those people will be curious (hopefully).
