How I Hit 2,500 Signups and $150 MRR Without Touching My Product for 12 Months

Hey Indie Hackers ๐Ÿ‘‹

About a year ago, my indie project PinkLion - an AI-powered investing copilot - was gaining initial traction. Then life happened (I became a father!), and I had to step away from the project completely. I paused development, stopped marketing, and didnโ€™t touch any aspect of the product for an entire year.

Honestly, I expected the product to fade into obscurity, but something amazing happened instead:

Fast forward 12 months, I logged back into my dashboard and saw that PinkLion had somehow quietly attracted around 2,500 signups and was consistently earning $150 MRR, all without a single update or marketing effort. It felt like I had accidentally discovered passive traction!

Here's what I learned about why it kept growing:

SEO and Organic Discovery:
Early on, I put a lot of effort into foundational SEO. Clear messaging, strong keyword targeting, and content that answered genuine investor questions kept driving steady traffic long after I stopped actively promoting the product.

A Clear Value Proposition:
Users could immediately understand what PinkLion did and the problem it solved (making investment decisions easier and smarter). The simplicity of the value proposition resonated strongly enough to convert casual visitors into long-term users.

Sticky Features from Day One:
I initially prioritized building features that encouraged repeat usage and delivered clear value like easy portfolio tracking, testing investment strategies through scenario simulations before committing real money, and actionable portfolio insights. These helped maintain high user engagement even during my absence.

Whatโ€™s next?

Now that I'm back in action, I've started actively building again. Recently shipped new features include:

๐Ÿฉบ Portfolio Health Checks: Instant insights on diversification, risk exposure, and more.

๐Ÿ”„ Broker Integrations: Seamless connection with broker accounts to reduce friction.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Index Benchmarking: Users can benchmark their portfolios against major market indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100.

Looking ahead, I'm excited to actively grow PinkLion again. I'll continue focusing on user feedback, improving retention and expanding features, while sharing transparently here.

Iโ€™d love to hear from you:

Have you ever experienced unexpected passive growth?

Any questions or feedback on what made PinkLion successful during this quiet phase?
