How many of you were in Band in High School?
Okay so I am thinking about this question floating around and it hit different than I expected...
Because I was in a band before. no marching band, no orchestra, no jazz ensemble with a chair number attached to my name.
Just me and my high school friends..
Life was so easy back then...
But reading through what actual band kids say about it... something clicked.
One guy said two hours a day of practice as a teenager made it obvious later who started after high school. another said band probably changed the entire trajectory of his life. someone else said they were in every band and every chorus, studied music in college, and is currently broke lol.
That last one stuck with me the longest.
Because that's the fork in the road nobody warns you about. you can have the discipline. you can have the ensemble experience, the theory, the ear, the years of reps... and still end up broke if nobody ever taught you the other half of this.
Nobody teaches musicians the business side. ever. band class teaches you to show up on time, hit your part, listen to the people around you, trust the arrangement even when your part alone sounds boring. that's real training. that's discipline most industries would kill for.
I came into composing and sound design from a completely different angle, no band room, no chair test, just building things alone and learning by doing. and what I noticed fast is the kids who had the two-hour-a-day discipline usually had the skill locked down early. what they didn't have was any framework for turning that skill into something that pays rent.
