How many recruiting emails do you receive a week?

Hey all! The number of recruiting emails I get has steadily climbed to the point that I have an email template and filters for dealing with them. Does anyone else have this same problem?

Would you pay for a service that automagically deals with them? (i.e: $1/mo) If not, would you use something like that if it was free?

Cool to see you here :).

Before I used to get spammed via LinkedIn, which was fine since I could ignore it. But lately they've seeped into my emails and it's been a little annoying.

I still can't see myself paying for a service that would handle that, but that's also because I usually don't care if I don't respond to every email, or leave some unread.

I feel like this would be useful for people who do care about responding to everything, though. Just not sure how big that market really is.

      Woah! Small world 👋

Definitely agree with your assessments. I'm also unsure of whether there's even a market. It's essentially the intersection of people who get recruiting emails + people who are pretty tidy with their email/get bothered.

Would you use something like that if it were free?

Depends on how easy it was to set up, and I'd also be curious (suspicious) as to what other mechanisms you'd make money off of this 😉.

In my humble opinion, creating something that automatically handles messages from recruiters is treating the symptoms rather than the problem, and you may miss legitimate, life-changing opportunities.

The deeper solution would be to have a single platform where you can still communicate with recruiters, but only select, curated recruiters and companies are allowed to join so that you're not getting spammed.

If you do receive spam on this platform, then you can report the recruiter/company knowing that they will be banned since it's not tolerated.

I've been working on building this platform at https://arentstandard.com. Would love to hear your thoughts on it

I think you're totally right that something like this would be treating the symptoms rather than the core problem. However, given how big of a core problem this is, I still think there's room for tools that help mitigate the symptoms.

Arent Standard looks great, but even in the ideal case where it becomes the defacto recruiter communication platform that properly addresses spam, it would take quite a long time. Despite LinkedIn's dominance in the professional networking space, they haven't eliminated the number of recruiting emails I seem to get.

That being said, this still could just be a bad idea! 😅

The sales barrier isn't cost; it's the belief that it will work. The world seems overrun with sites that claim to "solve recruiting" but turn out not to. The auto-magic would have to (1) fend off the people that I want fended off but (2) allow through the people who I want allowed through and (3) (optionally but hopefully) goad the recruiter into giving more information than they volunteer (e.g. where is the job located? what is the pay range?) Recruiters play coy because they know that spending a candidate's time => candidate is more likely to continue the process of this job.

Super valuable feedback. Can you envision a scenario in which you'd be convinced that a service like this might work for you? If so, how does that happen?

The combination of your points 1 and 2 is definitely tricky. I don't have a clear answer here, but I wonder if some type of batched summary might address problem 2. Maybe you receive a monthly summary email that you can glance over to make sure you don't miss any important opportunities.

It’s unpopular but you’ll earn much more money helping recruiters than helping job seekers. But ...

        (1) You could put all the jobs into a standard format so they could go in a grid or list or (2) do something like greenhouse.io for candidates, track which jobs are in recruiter screen, tech screen, on-site (1st or 2nd day), VP meet or offer stage.

You might try making something free and valuable to candidates and then sell access to recruiters or hiring managers. If job seekers are actively using your system, recruiters will pay to get access to them.

Probably would use it if it was free. The problem is that most of my recruiters contact me on linked in.

I usually let them fill up and then copy-paste a response to all of them :P

Great point about LinkedIn. For me, the volume is about equal between email and LinkedIn but I don't respond to any LinkedIn inbound 😅Meanwhile, I have a ritual around handling my email and so it bothers me more there.

Ideally you could build a service for LinkedIn as well, but they do have pretty closed off API's. Appreciate the input nonetheless!

        Cool!

As I said, if there was a nice service to collect both email and linked in stuff I might have an interest to use it. Not sure how it would work though. How would the service have access to my emails?

People would have to sign in with Gmail (like how unroll.me does it), giving the service access to detect incoming emails and handle them appropriately. Can definitely foresee some security/privacy concerns there.

I see. I'm gonna be honest and say that I would never sign up for something like that. I get far to personal and sensitive information sent to me via email.
