How to return money from your purchased domain
Hi,
I've been trying to build my SaaS applications for many times. The first thing I've been doing was purchasing a domain name. By the time I failed my idea the domain is the only thing that left. I'm sure many of you did the same.
So..I got this idea to create a website where everybody can get rid of their paid domains earlier the expiration date. You have six or nine months before the domain will expire? Great. Just sell it to someone who would like to have it.
What do you think about that?

There is currently no revenue model in place so no not generating any revenue. Traffic is steadily growing through and looking into building out some new features and functionality and revenue model soon-ish.

I'm assuming almost noone is going to buy your domain name for your random project you thought up. Maybe 1/100 times but I can't imagine consistently that would be a thing. Just let it expire and move on.

I also thought about renting out the name with a like a lease option to buy type arrangement. It's transferred to a third party site and then your invoiced monthly for the name rental.
I know a guy that used to do this professionally with a very large portfolio of the highest quality domain names on a certain TLD. He stopped bothering because it wasn't what the market wanted even for extremely high quality domains that are expensive to buy. Now he just sells them and that's how he makes his money.
So... I don't see much of a market for this or it really being worth your time.
I was thinking another problem someone rents, it starts using it for porn or something and now the domain is kind worthless.
James, how your friend is marketing his site? Why people buy from him and not godaddy,namecheap,etc?
He is a professional domainer. He is not a registrar himself. He bought domains from a registrar and he parks them and when people want to buy that name they see it is taken and they must negotiate with him to buy it.
He used to lease domain names to people. He stopped doing that. Just sells them now.
The first thing that comes to my mind is https://www.namepros.com - a platform where you can sell your domain. I am not sure if it's mainly for premium domain names or not.
Thanks, German for sharing this. Do you have domains purchased in the past but do not using them now?
Akim, of course :) Usually I just set them to expire and hit up friends that run honeypots (given that no mailboxes were hosted on the domains)
