Hey /r/startups,
My goal for 2018 is to learn more about the crypto/blockchain space as it's growing so quickly.
There's no better way to learn than by jumping in the deep end, so I decided to:
Build a crypto-related project and learn the Coinbase API
Invest a very small amount of money in a few coins to see how it all worked
I ended up building a pretty simple fun site using the Coinbase API: https://www.topofthecoins.com/
It's just a bit of fun really. I'm going to try and get lots of eyeballs on it such that it becomes a valuable advertising space. Having said that, I don't have super high hopes for it, and I've already achieved my goal of learning a bit more about crypto/coinbase/etc.
Had a couple of small transfers so far, which is really encouraging. Also got featured on ProductHunt today.
What crypto/blockchain things are you all working on? Any feedback on my project?
Cheers,
Joe
This is a great idea. I will share this with some friends.
Thanks, I’d really appreciate that! :-)
This is a pretty good idea! Plus, it gets you some much sought after ETH. Your own version of Google Ads, haha.
Haha yeah, that’s a good way of looking at it! Thanks for the kind words!
Kinda reminds me of this: http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/
It looks like a fun project :)
Thanks Joseph!
In the back of my mind I have the success of www.MillionDollarHomepage.com in the back of my mind. I know that in reality it probably won't take off like that did, but it's still super exciting think what could be... :-)
Interesting concept. How long did it take to build?
Thanks! A few days over the Christmas period. In terms of hours, I'd probably say 10-20. A very large proportion of that though was spent debugging the Coinbase API webhook. Because I could only test that in live, it became a massive headache and took ages to resolve.
Whenever I build something, I always make sure to learn a new technology. This is so that I still benefit even if the project doesn't take off. In this case, I used Bootstrap 4 for the first time, learned the Coinbase API, and also learned how to programmatically post to Twitter.
Thanks,
Joe
