I Built a Ridiculous Brand to Test Community Powered Growth — Here’s What’s Actually Working

Hey all,
I’ve been testing a weird little experiment over the last few months: a chaotic giftable brand called Mildly Prepared. It sells emergency kits you would never find in a serious prepper’s garage (think: "Toddler Airport Survival Kit").

My goal wasn’t just sales. I wanted to see if I could:

  • Launch without paid ads
  • Grow only using communities like this one
  • Build an affiliate recruiter model instead of doing all the outreach myself

Here’s what’s actually worked so far:

  • Reddit and Discord have driven more traffic than Indie Hackers or Product Hunt
  • Creating funny, lightly useful content gets way more interest than polished stuff
  • Affiliate recruiters are way easier to find if I give them their own kit with swipe files, images, captions, and onboarding
  • Saying “this is commission only” up front has saved me so much back and forth

Still figuring it out but happy to share templates, onboarding flows, or affiliate stuff if anyone’s trying something similar. Not selling anything here, just experimenting in public.

Would love to hear what other people are testing when it comes to low cost growth or leveraging communities. What’s working for you?
