Building Wheel of Founders: Week 2 – The 5 Signs I Almost Missed
Hey Indie Hackers! Quick update on my build-in-public journey.
Recap: I'm 30 days into building Wheel of Founders – a thinking partner for founders (especially mom founders) who are tired of performative productivity. Last week I shared my origin story. This week? I'm sharing what the data taught me about burnout.
The Data That Stopped Me
When I started this project, I thought I understood burnout.
Then I became a mother who also builds things. And I learned that burnout doesn't look like what the internet told me.
It whispers. It creeps. It disguises itself as "just a busy week" until suddenly you're crying in a different room from your toddler, wondering how you got there.
After 30 days of tracking my energy, decisions, and emotions, here are the 5 signs I almost missed – the ones that don't show up in the typical "burnout checklist."
Sign #1: The 7 PM Switch Flip
"Around 7pm it's like a switch flips, my motivation disappears."
I thought this was normal tiredness. But the data showed it creeping earlier each week. First 8 PM. Then 7. Then by Week 3, I was crashing at 5:30.
What I thought: "I just need to push through."
What was actually happening: Cognitive overload. My brain was full of unprocessed decisions – every small choice, every priority shuffle – and by evening, the system was shutting down as protection.
What I built to fix it: A 7-minute evening ritual in the app that helps founders close loops before they carry them into tomorrow.
Sign #2: Decisions Started Feeling Heavy
"Even small choices start to feel heavy when there's no one to double check them."
Day 21. Staring at a simple email reply. Felt like lifting weights.
What I thought: "I'm just tired. I'll decide tomorrow."
What was actually happening: Decision residue. Every unmade decision was accumulating in my mental RAM. The email wasn't heavy – the 47 decisions before it were.
What I built to fix it: Real-time capture. When a choice feels heavy, Mrs. Deer prompts you to jot it down immediately. Just writing it releases the weight.
Sign #3: Maintenance Ate Growth
"A lot of days don't feel like growth. They feel like maintenance."
Day 7 insight, but I didn't act on it for weeks. I was busy. Really busy. But the "growth" column at end of week? Nearly empty.
What I thought: "This is just what building looks like."
What was actually happening: The urgent was devouring the important. I was confusing activity with progress.
What I built to fix it: The Power List. Three tasks max per day. Two proactive. One reactive. This single shift moved me from "feels like maintenance" to actual momentum.
Sign #4: The Hollow Win
Hit a milestone. Should be celebrating. Felt... nothing.
What I thought: "Maybe this goal wasn't the right one."
What was actually happening: Purpose drift. I'd lost touch with why the work mattered. The win was hollow because I wasn't connected to meaning.
What I built to fix it: Mrs. Deer's question: "What value were you serving with that decision?" Connecting daily actions to deeper values fills the hollow.
Sign #5: The Itch to Fix Overrode Presence
Day 30. My son was at the playground with my husband. I was home, supposedly taking a break. Instead, I was debugging. Itching. Couldn't stop until the problem solved.
What I thought: "I just need to finish this one thing."
What was actually happening: Compulsion. Work stopped being a choice and started being a reflex. The itch to fix had overridden my ability to be present.
What I built to fix it: Mrs. Deer's question: "What would 'finished enough' look like so you can close the laptop and mean it?"
Still answering that one.
Current Build Status
Area Status
App 90% built, Mrs. Deer persona getting closer
Waitlist 50+ founders (mostly mom founders – my people!)
Marketing Pivoted from Reddit (banned 😅) to Facebook/LinkedIn/Indie Hackers
Husband status Went from skeptic to believer in 3 days. Quote: "Coffee + work time with wife is also a type of win." If Mrs. Deer can reach him, she can reach anyone.
What I'm Learning About Building in Public
Weekly tracking > daily tracking. Some days are 7 conversions. Some are 3. Some are zero. Trends matter. Days don't.
The itch to fix is real. I have to remind myself daily: "What would 'finished enough' look like so I can close the laptop and mean it?"
Your audience finds you when you're honest. The mom founders showed up when I stopped trying to sound like a SaaS founder and started sounding like myself.

For fellow builders:
How do you catch burnout signs in yourself before it's too late?
Anyone else building for the "mom founder" audience? Would love to connect.
What's your "finished enough" threshold? How do you know when to stop?
Happy to share more raw data. Building in public means sharing the messy parts too.
