I Built a YouTube Shorts Downloader in 7 Days — Here’s What Happened

A week ago, I launched a small side project called:

YouTubeShortDownloader.com

The idea was simple:

Build a clean, fast YouTube Shorts downloader without the spammy UX that most downloader sites have.

No fake buttons.
No aggressive popups.
No weird redirects.

Just: paste link ➡️ get video ➡️download ➡️ done

I mainly wanted to test two things:

  1. Whether there was still SEO opportunity in the “YouTube downloader” space
  2. Whether niche-focused pages (Shorts specifically) could rank faster than generic “YouTube video downloader” keywords

Turns out… the answer might be yes.

Why I Chose “YouTube Shorts Downloader”

Most downloader sites compete for massive keywords like:

  • “youtube video downloader”
  • “youtube mp3 downloader”

Those keywords are insanely competitive.

But while doing keyword research, I noticed something interesting:

  • “youtube shorts downloader”
  • “youtube short downloader”

had:

  • decent search volume
  • much lower keyword difficulty
  • weaker SERP quality

At the same time, Shorts usage is exploding globally.

So instead of building a generic downloader first, I decided to focus on a narrower use case:

  • downloading Shorts in MP4
  • mobile-friendly experience
  • fast conversion
  • no-watermark workflow

Tech Stack

Pretty lightweight setup:

  • Next.js
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Vercel
  • Cloudflare

I wanted:

  • fast deployment
  • good Core Web Vitals
  • minimal infrastructure overhead

7-Day SEO Results

The site launched on May 14.

This is what happened after the first week:

Google Search Console

  • 39.9K impressions
  • 1.13K clicks
  • 2.8% CTR
  • Average position: 7.5

Honestly, I expected almost zero impressions in week one.

The biggest surprise:
Google indexed the pages much faster than I thought.

User Behavior Data

Using Microsoft Clarity, after ~1 week:

  • 2,279 sessions
  • 2,003 unique users
  • ~58 seconds average active time

Most traffic is currently:

  • organic search
  • mobile-heavy
  • mostly new users

One interesting observation:
Users spend surprisingly little time on downloader sites if the UX is clear.

That sounds obvious, but many competitors intentionally make the process confusing to maximize ad clicks.

I tried doing the opposite.

Biggest SEO Lesson So Far

I think the biggest mistake in this niche is:

trying to rank for everything immediately.

Instead, I focused on:

  • one narrow intent
  • one clean UX
  • one keyword cluster

Right now the homepage is focused almost entirely on:

  • “youtube shorts downloader”
  • related long-tail variations

Then I started expanding into supporting pages like:

  • YouTube video downloader
  • MP4 downloader
  • audio-related pages

Basically trying to build topical authority gradually instead of launching 100 thin pages.

Biggest Problem Right Now

Ironically:

Google traffic is growing faster than Bing.

I expected Bing to be easier.

But currently Bing sends almost no meaningful traffic despite pages being indexed.

Still trying to figure out:

  • whether Bing dislikes downloader sites
  • whether the domain is too new
  • or whether Bing simply reacts slower to new SEO projects

Would love insights from anyone who has experience ranking utility/tool sites on Bing.

What I’m Working on Next

Current priorities:

  • improving CTR
  • adding better FAQ content
  • building internal linking
  • creating more downloader-related clusters
  • improving mobile UX further

I’m also experimenting with:

  • semantic SEO structure
  • topical authority
  • AI-search visibility

A Few Things That Surprised Me

1. Google still rewards focused pages

Even in an ultra-competitive niche.

A highly focused page targeting one clear intent seems to outperform generic “all-in-one” pages early on.

2. UX matters more than most SEO people think

Especially in utility tools.

People leave instantly if:

  • the page feels shady
  • there are too many ads
  • the workflow is confusing

I think “trust UX” is becoming a ranking factor indirectly through user behavior.

3. Topical authority seems real

The moment I added supporting downloader pages, impressions accelerated noticeably.

Still early, but interesting signal.

Current Goal

My short-term goal is simple:

Get this project to stable organic traffic first before thinking about monetization.

No ads yet.
No subscriptions.
Just trying to validate search demand and SEO scalability.

Curious if anyone else here is building SEO-first utility tools in 2026.

Especially:

  • downloader tools
  • converter tools
  • AI utilities
  • browser-based tools

Would love to compare notes.
