I Built an AI-Powered vertical tab manager for Chrome that hit #2 on Product Hunt - Here's my solo dev journey from idea to 100+ paid users

I wanted to share my journey of building Side Space, an AI-powered Chrome extension that automatically organizes your tabs into meaningful groups. After one year of development, we just hit #2 Product of the Day on Product Hunt and crossed 3K active users and 100+ paid users!

The idea came from my own pain point - I'm that person with 50+ tabs open, desperately trying to find that one Stack Overflow post I saw earlier. I figured AI could solve this better than manual organization.

Some key learnings from the journey:

🔧 Technical Challenges:

  • Had zero experience with Chrome extensions (Stack Overflow became my best friend)

  • Implementing AI was trickier than expected - had to balance accuracy vs. processing speed

  • Learned that server costs for AI processing can add up quickly (Anthropic bills were scary at first)

👥 User Feedback Loop:

  • Released an early beta to 100 users from Twitter

  • Their feedback completely changed my initial feature roadmap

  • Found out users wanted simple grouping more than advanced AI features

💰 Marketing (with $0 budget):

  • Built in public on Twitter

  • Posted weekly progress on Reddit and Indie Hackers

  • The biggest surprise was how supportive the maker community has been. Every time I felt stuck, someone would jump in with advice or encouragement.

Current stats:

  • 3k+ active users

  • 4.3/5 rating on Chrome Web Store

  • #2 Product of day on Product Hunt

  • 2.5K Revenue from premium features

Next steps:

  • Global Fuzzy Search (Most request feature)

  • Improving the AI model

  • Enhance the Space Management

Happy to answer any questions about the technical implementation, marketing strategies, or anything else! Also willing to jump on a call if anyone's building something similar and wants to chat.

Keep building awesome things! 🚀
