I built InvoiceGenie because I lost $3,200 to missing invoices (and tax season was a nightmare)

The problem that made me want to scream

Picture this: It's 2 AM, tax deadline approaching, and I'm frantically digging through emails, bank statements, and random folders trying to find invoices for business expenses.

Sound familiar?

I discovered I was missing invoices for:

  • That SaaS tool I paid for monthly ($89/month × 12 months = $1,068 I couldn't deduct)
  • The freelancer who "forgot" to send me an invoice ($1,200 gone)
  • Various subscriptions and services (another $932 down the drain)

Total damage: $3,200 in tax deductions I couldn't claim because I had payments but no proper invoices.

My accountant just shrugged and said "no invoice, no deduction." Ouch.

The "aha" moment

I realized I wasn't alone. Talking to other founders, I kept hearing the same story:

  • "My contractor never sent me that invoice"
  • "I paid through PayPal but have no invoice"
  • "This service charges my card but doesn't send receipts"

We're all losing money because we have proof of payment but no invoices to match them.

What I built (and why it's helping)

InvoiceGenie is a simple tool to create missing invoices when providers don't send them. Right now it does two things really well:

  1. Manual invoice creation - Professional templates that are tax-compliant and look legit
  2. Bulk generation - Upload a spreadsheet and generate dozens of invoices at once

It's not automated (yet) - but it turns a 3-hour nightmare into a 15-minute task.

The results (and what I'm learning)

Since launching 6 weeks ago:

  • 180+ people have signed up to try it
  • Getting 2-3 new users daily (mostly organic/word of mouth)
  • People are creating 5-15 invoices on average
  • No revenue yet - I'm keeping it free while I get feedback

The biggest insight: people need this more than I thought, but they also want automation (which I'm working on).

What I learned building this

1. Sometimes the best ideas come from your own pain
I built this because I needed it. Turns out thousands of other people needed it too.

2. B2B pain points hide in plain sight
Everyone assumes "someone must have solved this already." Sometimes they haven't.

3. Compliance is actually a feature
Making invoices that work for tax purposes isn't just nice-to-have – it's the entire value prop.

The mistake I almost made

I initially wanted to build a "comprehensive expense management platform." Thank god I didn't. Focusing on one specific pain point (missing invoices) made the product 10x better.

What's next

Working on payment integrations so it can automatically detect missing invoices. Also want to add a feature to send invoice requests directly to vendors.

Right now I'm focused on getting feedback from early users to make sure I'm building the right thing.

Anyone else deal with missing invoice nightmares? Would love to hear your stories (and solutions) in the comments.
