I’m building an AI tool to automatically rename messy files
I’ve been building RenomeeAI, an AI-powered file renaming tool for Windows and macOS.
The idea is pretty simple: instead of manually renaming hundreds of files, let AI look at the file content and suggest meaningful names.
For example:
- IMG_1234.jpg → Tokyo_Street_2026.jpg
- document_001.pdf → Acme_Invoice_2026-09.pdf
- scan123.pdf → Apartment_Lease_Agreement.pdf
It can use content, metadata, EXIF data, PDF text, OCR, and other information to generate better filenames.
I originally built it because I was tired of dealing with folders full of files with meaningless names.
I’m still working on the product and trying to figure out what use cases people find most valuable.
If you deal with lots of PDFs, photos, documents, or downloads, I’d be interested to hear how you currently organize and rename them.

Have early conversations revealed a specific user group with recurring renaming pain, or are you still seeing interest spread across photos, PDFs, and general downloads?
The thing I would test early is what happens on a wrong rename, because that is where trust dies on anything that touches files people care about.
We do photo recognition on the food in your fridge, so the same problem shows up for us in a different costume. When detection calls spinach kale, the user does not think the model was 90 percent right, they think the whole thing is broken. What has helped is showing the raw guess and letting someone correct it in one tap, so a wrong result becomes a correction instead of an exit.
For files I would want an undo that reverses an entire batch, and visible before and after names on the first run so people are not trusting a black box with their folder.

The examples make the value easy to grasp. A preview plus undo/history feels essential—mislabeling an invoice or lease is worse than a messy filename. Let users lock parts of a naming template (date, client, project) while AI fills the uncertain part.
