Hey IH!
I want to start a conversation about concept in a product design sense because it's a powerful tool to make an idea sticky and spreadable, like jam on a stack of pancakes 😉
A concept is the core idea that drives a product, a thread that runs through everything about your product. Like describing a movie plot, it's a hook. It makes it easier to promote your product because people remember hooks.
"We're a search engine" vs "Imagine if information was free." (Google)
"We're a web host" vs "Imagine you could publish a site in a blink." (Netlify)
"We're a hybrid app platform" vs "Imagine mobile apps powered by the web." (Ionic)
It's $Free.99 to whittle your product vision down to an inspiring concept, so try it out.
Tip: Preface your concept with “Imagine this:” and if it feels good to think about, like transcendent or aspirational, then it’s a workable concept.
Something that makes you feel, “Ooh I wanna be part of that.”
If you're interested in more, I really suggest the book “Nobody Wants To Read Your Sh–” by Steven Pressfield. He talks a lot about concept as a former screenwriter.
What's your thoughts on the concept of concept? Feel free to link your landing page, and I will critique it as best I can from this lens.
I think concept is also important in graphic design. When producing any posters, publication materials or even motion graphics, they need to stick to the key message or topic so that the visual elements can effectively convey it. Eye-catching visuals can emphasize the message, leaving a strong impression for users.
(btw I am a rookie graphic designer currently trying motion graphics)
