More Traffic Isn’t Always the Answer
A thousand random visitors can be less valuable than a handful of people who actually need what you built.
That’s why product discovery should be about more than raw numbers.
LaunchNest LN helps people discover SaaS, AI tools, and indie products while giving founders another way to reach relevant audiences.
The goal isn’t just more eyes. It’s better discovery.
The key metric seems like qualified action rather than sessions: click → signup → activation → retention by source. A small discovery channel can look strong if founders also close the loop with a short question about what almost stopped them. That feedback makes the channel useful even before volume is large.
The useful distinction is between attention and intent. For a discovery channel, I’d track the rate from qualified visit to one meaningful action, then a 7-day return or referral—not just clicks—so you can see whether the audience is actually learning, adopting, and sharing the product.
One signal I would put above a qualified click is a paid request, even a small one. A $9 or $19 action forces the buyer to commit to a problem instead of only saying it sounds useful. Track which request converts and what it asks for, then build the discovery flow around the requests that repeat. Visits show who noticed. Payment shows what deserves your time.
Interesting. How are you measuring whether it is working?
The premise is true and slightly incomplete, because you cannot pick out the handful in advance. That is the actual difficulty. A thousand random visitors and fifty relevant ones look identical on the way in and only separate afterwards, by what the people did. So the first thing worth investing in is not a narrower audience, it is being able to tell later which visitors mattered and where they came from. Without that, a targeted channel and a random one produce the same report and the choice gets made on instinct. Narrowing before you can measure is just guessing with fewer people.
If better discovery is the pitch, publish the proof. Show founders the click to signup rate LaunchNest actually delivers compared to a Product Hunt listing, even if the number is small, because that is the only thing separating you from every other directory making the same claim. Directories that publish conversion data get submissions, directories that talk about quality get ignored.
Interesting approach! I’m working on something in the product discovery space too. Definitely checking this out.
Exactly—discovery quality shows up after the click, not in the visitor count. I’d track which problem statement brought each visitor, then compare qualified actions by source; for AI-driven discovery, also log the prompts or intent patterns that repeatedly surface the product. That keeps “visibility” tied to relevance rather than vanity reach.
More traffic into a broken funnel just accelerates the bleed. The founders who figure this out early are the ones who stop pouring budget into ads and start diagnosing why the visitors they already have aren't converting. Retention rate and engagement depth tell you so much more than raw traffic numbers ever could. Great reminder that growth hacks don't fix product-market fit gaps.
