Need feedback on how to improve CRO

Hi there,

I need some help with some feedback on ways I can improve my conversion rate. I've had about 500 free trials in the past few weeks since launching, but only 2 people so far have converted to paying customers.

I've built an Instagram growth tool and we have a free 3-day trial. My site is here: gramgress.com

Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I think your homepage does a pretty good job describing what your tool does, but a problem (with this entire industry basically) is that it might attract teenagers who want more followers but do not have any budget :)

I would start investigating on two paths:

    1. See whether the trial users actually used the product, on what kind of accounts, and whether it did what it says on the box. Maybe it did not? Maybe these are not your target customers? Maybe they need a few more days to get hooked?
    2. Go talk to churned users. Ask them why they signed up for the trial initially and why they decided not to pay. Just cold email them. It works.

Depending on what you find out, there are many things you can do. On the marketing front - maybe changing the acquisition channels, messaging, pricing, requiring a credit card to start the trial and then have the conversion to paying customers as an opt-out, and so on.

Let us know what you find out, this is interesting.

      Hello!

Thanks so much for your feedback.

I think you make a really good point about teenagers being a big attractor to the site and that they don't have the budget for a service like this.

      1. Good point. I need to start looking into this. Do you think a 7 day trial would be better?

      2. Haven't done this yet but good call. Super helpful!

Truly appreciate you taking the time to leave this feedback. Thank you!

I totally agree with ohad. I’d also add that in addition to testing a longer free trial, it might be worth exploring tiers based on a value metric (followers?) since the market has so many personas (teenagers, businesses, etc).

It could even make sense to have a Freemium model instead of a time-limited free trial, so people with X followers or less could use it for free, but once they cross that threshold they’re on a paid plan if they want to keep using it. If it was tiered/metered, it could start out much lower than $100, yet go much higher for bigger accounts.

Also, I just had a random idea for a name in this space: GramTracker.

Since analytics is the first feature listed, that could be a cool name since it’s easy to say (sounds like “graham cracker”) and easy to remember. Plus, it tells visitors what it does for them (track, and therefore increase, their Instagram followers).

Nothing relevant comes up on Google for it and the .co and .io are available, so I figured I’d throw it out there just in case it could be helpful.

How would you go about tiers on value metrics such as followers? It's hard to say how many followers someone will gain over the course of each month. Some users might only gain a few hundred while others would gain a few thousand.

Okay that's an interesting point with the freemium model. I will look into this more. Thank you!

I like the name GramTracker. Thank you for your help!

No problem! You could do tiers on total followers, or based on their follower growth (absolute or percentage). I think total followers would be the easiest to understand, and it’d allow you to charge more for bigger accounts from the start.

You could do something similar to what Baremetrics does with MRR.

It’s also possible to use the Quantity field in Stripe to have one subscription price (e.g. $10/mo) scale up based on the tier they’re in for that month. For example, if they have 10,000 followers that might put them in tier 10, so they’d be charged $10/mo x Quantity 10 = $100 for the month.

That way, the barrier to entry is low, but it scales infinitely as you help them increase their followers.

Interesting, will check out what Baremetrics does. Thank you!

Gotcha, never really thought of it it like that nor have I seen that done on any of the other Instagram growth tools so could be a cool experiment at the very least.

                Thank you again!

Not sure a 7-day trial will be necessarily better. It depends on what you find out and how your product works. I think the main question is how long will it take a normal customer to be proven your product does something they'll pay for.

          Gotcha, makes sense. Thank you!

You have a very valid point!

Yeah I get what you mean. It's too bad but it's reality so we have to find ways to deal with it.

          Thanks for your comment!
