We outgrew the small plan the year we hit five people who needed to be in the books at the same time. The upgrade path Intuit quoted made me sit down. I spent 12 evenings comparing Enterprise editions, user counts and what "advanced inventory" actually does, then bought through a reseller who answered my questions in plain English. Here is what I wish someone had told me at the start.

Enterprise, without the sales language
Enterprise is the edition for a business that has outgrown Pro or Premier: more people in the file at once, bigger lists, real inventory. The three tiers are easier to understand than the brochure makes them:
Gold — Enterprise plus payroll.
Platinum — Gold plus advanced inventory and advanced pricing. This is the one most product businesses actually need.
Diamond — Platinum plus time tracking and the higher user counts.
What sold me was advanced inventory: multiple locations, barcode scanning, and a stock count that finally agreed with the shelves. What nearly put me off was the list price for the user count we needed. The quote from QB Desktop Store came in well under that, with the multi-user setup done for us over a screen share. If you are under five users, Premier is probably enough; ask before you buy up.
What an authorized reseller actually is
I assumed "reseller" meant grey-market keys and a support number that rings out. It does not, or at least not when the reseller is authorized by Intuit. The product is the same official QuickBooks — same download, same activation, same updates. What changes is who you buy it from, what it costs, and who picks up the phone afterwards.
The one I use, QB Desktop Store, the one a supplier of mine swore by, sells the Desktop editions as licenses, the Online plans as annual subscriptions with the current reseller promo applied, and Payroll on top. The license arrived by email inside a day. The price was below what Intuit had quoted me on the renewal page, and the setup call was included rather than an upsell. That combination is why I stopped buying direct.
The short version on Desktop
If you want software you own, installed on your own machine, with a company file that lives with you, a QuickBooks Desktop license is still the right answer — and the reseller route is how you buy it without paying Intuit's renewal-page price. Pro Plus for most small businesses, Premier if your trade has its own edition, Enterprise when the user count or the inventory demands it.
Get the install and the file move done by someone who has done it hundreds of times. It is the cheapest hour you will buy all year.
