Who — or what — is actually behind the artist?
Starting mid-september 2026, spotify is rolling out an "ai persona" badge for artist profiles it decides are ai-generated identities. it'll show on profiles, in search, next to tracks, the whole deal.
A real songwriter using ai to build a backing track is one thing fr. a fully synthetic persona — ai face, ai voice, ai biography — is a completely different beast lol. spotify wants listeners to actually know the difference, and they're not just trusting artists to self-report either, they can slap the label on themselves.
That's the harder problem underneath all this tbh. the industry now has to sort human artists, ai-assisted work, fully ai-generated tracks, synthetic personas, licensed ai collabs, and straight up impersonation into something that makes sense. spotify's been clear ai music isn't getting banned though, the actual line is deception and transparency, not ai use itself.
And you can already see the industry splitting into camps. suno went the licensed route through warner and bmg. umg partnered with elevenlabs on a licensed remix platform. deezer's out here drowning in fraudulent ai uploads. aria in australia just yeeted fully ai-generated music off its charts entirely. everyone's picking a lane, license it, label it, verify it, ban it, or just see you in court ig.
The tech stopped being the hard part a while ago lowkey. the rules are the actual grind now.
