The most confusing line in a Windows battery report isn't battery health
While building Battery Health Lab, I noticed that most people jump straight to Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity.
Those numbers matter, but they do not explain every battery-drain problem.
One easily misunderstood section is battery usage state. “Suspended” and “Connected Standby” are not the same:
- Suspended usually means the system is doing very little work.
- Connected Standby can keep network and background activity running while the device appears asleep.
That means a laptop can lose charge overnight even when battery capacity still looks reasonable. Replacing the battery may not fix the real cause.

A useful troubleshooting pairing is the battery report plus Windows SleepStudy/powercfg output, because the timeline can show when the drain happened while the latter points at the sessions or background activity. A small checklist that records sleep state, network connectivity, and wake sources would make “overnight drain” much easier to reproduce than comparing capacity numbers alone.
