The Time FedEx Never Made It 📦

The Time FedEx Never Made It 📦

Remember the saying that "business only fails if the owner gave up"? FedEx came about as close as a company can get to proving that saying wrong.

In 1971, Fred Smith launched Federal Express with a radical idea: a company built entirely around overnight delivery. Fuel prices kept rising, the company kept burning through cash, and by 1974, FedEx was down to roughly $5,000 left in the bank. Smith needed millions just to keep the planes flying, and he couldn't raise enough fast enough through normal channels.

So he took the company's remaining $5,000 to Las Vegas. He came back with $27,000 (this move alone sounds like a movie scene lol). It wasn't nearly enough to fix the underlying business problems, but it bought just enough time to keep operations alive for a little longer.

Smith managed to raise additional funding after that, and Federal Express survived long enough to become the company known today as FedEx. 💵

Three lessons worth pulling from this:

  1. Survival comes first
When a business is running out of oxygen, vanity metrics stop mattering. The priority becomes finding a way to stay alive.

  2. Cash buys time
FedEx didn't need a perfect strategy that night in Vegas. It needed enough runway to get one more shot at fixing things properly.

  3. The idea isn't the business
Smith had a genuinely compelling idea, but turning it into a functioning company required aircraft, infrastructure, capital, and relentless execution behind the scenes.

The takeaway:
Sometimes survival looks nothing like strategy. It looks like buying one more week, one more shot, one more chance to fix things properly.

What's the riskiest move you've made just to buy your business a little more runway?

This is great work — reminds me of some of the calls I've had to make building Xstream4K. What would you do differently if you started over?
