We analyzed how agencies actually use SEO reports — and realized most of them aren’t used at all

Over the past few months, we’ve been spending a lot of time understanding how agencies and freelancers actually use SEO reports in real workflows.

What we expected:
Reports are used to track performance and guide decisions.

What we found:
Most reports are created… and then barely used.

The pattern we kept seeing:

Reports are built around metrics, not decisions
Clients don’t engage with dashboards — they ask for direction
Teams spend hours compiling data, but very little time translating it

At some point, reporting became more about showing work than driving action.

That led us to a bigger question:

👉 What should SEO reporting actually look like if the goal is to help someone decide what to do next?

We started breaking this down — not from a tooling perspective, but from a workflow perspective:

Where does reporting actually get used?
What questions do clients really care about?
What makes a report actionable vs just informative?

Still exploring this, but it’s already changed how we think about SEO entirely.

If you’re working with SEO (agency or in-house), I’d be curious:

👉 Do your reports actually influence decisions, or are they more of a reporting ritual?
