Hello Hackers!
I’ve never posted here before, but I thought it was time to share my journey too. I have learned a lot from the stories in this community, so I’d love to give back some value by sharing mine. This is quite a big-bite project for me, and I think many of you will find it interesting!
My name is Filip, one of the people behind invoicegenerator.com → a free tool to instantly create and download invoices online.
As you can tell by the high-end domain, we intend to hit #1 in rankings and we launched it with a simple experiment: grow purely through SEO. No paid campaigns, no partnerships, no gimmicks - just keyword research, content, and patience.
Here’s what happened so far.
Why SEO-only?
The Data (so far):
Context behind the data: Almost all of our traffic came from the direct channel! Just by typing the domain name in the URL bar. The traffic is coming from all over the world. We have almost 0 content on the site so far, our blog still isn’t active and we’re just having some template options attacking the keywords such as Flooring Invoice Template etc.
We’re quite happy with the number of signups because there is almost zero reason to do so. We are offering a full creation process, instant payment links (Stripe), super well-made analytics features and even the browser cache storing information such as your Company info, Clients and their info, Items/Services and their rates. The only upside of signing up is to be able to access that from different devices.
And lastly, the subscriptions. Nothing more than extra convenience! Sending the invoices directly through the application, automated reminders for payments and recurring invoices for clients on retainers.
What We Learned
This is not our first rodeo with SEO based tools, so we have a good idea how this will play out.
What’s Next
As of our previous experience Google paid ads did not pay out extremely well with these strategies. So we will consider different approaches.
Question for the readers:
I would LOVE feedback from the community and especially SEO masters:
If you built projects in a competitive niche with $0 ad spend, what worked for you the best? Focusing first on more content, features or backlinks?
How long did it take you to reach the KPI goals, whatever they were?
Did you try paid advertising on other platforms apart from Google? How did it play out?
We’re also thinking of testing an interesting approach. Promoting our tool on Meta, but actually promoting the blogs itself and not the tool directly. Carefully thought of copywriting, headlines, creatives and the content. The blogs would be obviously built as a funnel to the tool. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this!
And, of course I would love any type of feedback on our tool itself! I’m not sure if this is against the rules of the forum, I apologize if so but if some of the readers are actual invoice makers/senders, I will be happy to reward any valuable feedback with free subscriptions!
Looking forward to answering any questions!!
