What do you do when your energy is low?

This tweet from @czue made me think.

One of the best things about indie hacking (or working for people that understand) is the ability to choose to not work on (hard) stuff when you are just not in the right frame of mind.

  • Sometimes I just sign off for a few hours, or the day.
  • Other times I play around with a new project idea.
  • Getting some exercise in never fails me.

What about you?

Get up and move to get the blood flowing

    • go for a walk
    • do some yard work
    • pushups
    • pull ups

Start a 10 minute self challenge by setting a timer and challenge myself to work on something for 10 minutes... not look at the clock and do it until the timer beeps. More times than not, I get on a roll.

      +1 for pushups!

I like to read, every time a read something cool I get energized thinking about using my new knowledge

Hey, thanks for the shout out!

I'm 100% with you and think being mindful of your own energy levels can be a really powerful productivity hack. I can always tell when I just don't have it in me to work on something, and rather than thrash and do something poorly I find it's way more productive to not even try and just pick it up again later when I'm in a better mental place.

One thing I've found useful is to have a backlog of "low energy" tasks - articles you meant to read, little bug fixes, etc. and just churn through those when you're feeling low energy.

And yeah, big +1 to exercise. That's my favorite cure to the mid-day slump.

The low energy tasks backlog is a super powerful idea, which I've been playing with for a while (have had a #loweffort tag in my todo list app for a while), but not really implemented yet. Thanks for bringing it up, might try it out properly this week!

Unplug, clear my thoughts, focus on anything but my side project. No expectations. I do this for a day or two every few days. Just recharge.

There are a few movies that can bring me out the bluest of the moods

I play music I like on YouTube and sing along with it! After 5-10 minutes of my own personal karaoke session, I almost always have a spurt of energy.

Going for a walk or meditating frequently helps me get into a better frame of mind, or at least it helps me see things from a different perspective :)

Sometimes I fall into just reading Reddit or something though, and I think that's ultimately time wasted in most cases. It's better to get away from the screens if I'm not going to be productive at them.

    Whatever you do, no screens.

You'll find that it's harder than you think.

But your brain can't really take respite from endless stimulation unless you eliminate all screens and digital pixels.

I have no problem having power naps, I have kids, so all I need is not being shouted at.

Why We Sleep is supposed to be good, I haven't read it, but I think my husband has preached the wisdom of it enough times. :D
