What Finally Made You Start Charging?

Founders, what finally made you charge for something you had been giving away free?

Was it rising costs, a clear customer request, or realizing free users were not the right users?

I’d love to hear the moment it clicked. What changed in your thinking, or in the product, that made charging feel fair?

If you have a small founder-focused tool to share, you can also add it at https://www.indieneed.com/submit — but I’m much more interested in the story behind the switch.

Curious how long it took before you saw the first real results?

We are pre revenue and deliberately have no paywall in the build yet, so take this as the opposite side of your question.

The reason I am holding off is that our day 2 retention is bad right now, and a paywall on top of a retention problem hides the retention problem behind a conversion number that looks like progress. I would rather find out that people come back on their own first, then charge.

Where it probably lands for us is free for a limited number of scans and paid for unlimited, plus institutions paying for seats for the people they serve.

Genuinely curious for those who charged from day one, did it change who showed up? I keep hearing that paying users give better feedback and I cannot tell if that is real or a story people tell after the fact.

Really solid approach — I'm juggling something similar myself (building Xstream4K on the side), what's been the hardest part for you so far?
