What’s the first thing real users made you simplify?

I keep noticing that early products usually get more complicated while we’re building them, then simpler once real users show up.

A flow that felt “obvious” suddenly needs fewer steps.

A settings page turns out to be unnecessary.

An onboarding sequence becomes one button.

A feature that needed explaining probably needed simplifying instead.

I think this is one of the most useful parts of getting a product in front of people early.

Not because users always know what you should build, but because they’re very good at showing you where the product is making them work too hard.

If you’ve launched something before:

What’s the first thing real users made you simplify?

Could be onboarding, pricing, a feature, navigation, anything.

This is useful. How are you finding your first users so far?

For text-heavy products, the first simplification I keep seeing is removing the “setup a workspace” step. If the user already has a place where the work happens, email draft, notes app, docs, editor, etc., meeting them there beats asking them to learn a new surface first. The product feels smaller, but activation gets much clearer.

You’re right that a new workspace is a cost in itself; customization doesn’t automatically make that easy. The first thing feedback changed for me was the empty starting screen: one flexible dashboard became too long and asked people to make choices before seeing value. In V2.1, blockmade starts with a complete Box and separates it into Plates. The Workforce demo has Overview, Attendance, Timesheets, Leave, and Payroll estimate; Attendance changes flow into Timesheets and the estimate. It’s a demo, not finished workforce or payroll software: https://blockmade.tech/box/workforce/plate/wf-overview?lang=en&utm_source=comment_reply&utm_content=ih-aaron-workspace-setup

A ready-made Box may lower setup, but it still asks someone to learn a new surface, so I’m testing whether the workflow is useful enough to justify that. That’s a real trade-off in this approach.
