When an AI answer cites the wrong URL after you edited the right page, do you wait, or fix the cited source first?
A comment on my last post pointed out something I keep running into. You change your homepage, but the AI answer keeps quoting an old comparison page or a directory blurb from weeks ago. So the wait looks endless, when the page you edited isn't even the one being read.
I see two ways to handle it. You can wait for the assistant to find the new page, or you can go update the old source it already cites.
I lean toward the second, because the cited page is the one that actually shapes the answer. But I'm not sure that holds for every assistant.
What do you do, and has either way worked for you?
fix the cited source, and the reason is mechanical. the assistant is not reading your site, it is reading whatever page its retrieval already trusts, and an old comparison page with links and history wins that contest over a homepage edit from last week. so the wait is not your new page getting crawled, it is the old source losing its grip, which can take months.
when you update the old source, do not just correct it. give it the specific quotable line you want repeated. assistants lift compact claims with numbers and names, not positioning copy. "x costs y and does z" survives the trip into an answer, a paragraph about your mission does not.
and yes it varies by assistant, some weight freshness, some weight domain history. the fix-first approach holds either way because you are editing the input instead of hoping the pipeline changes.
