Clarify AI: YouTube Summaries

In March 2024 I wanted to learn faster from YouTube. Every summarizer I tried felt wrong to some extent, so I did the classic developer thing - decided to build my own. Honestly, just for fun.

The first version was rough: imperfect UI and only one feature (summaries ). Within a couple of months it had a few thousand users. Without any ads or promotion people just found it, left positive reviews (mostly), and a few even sent donations for something I never asked money for.

Then I did... nothing. For about a year it just sat there improving what I had until my girlfriend pointing out that "this amateur project might be a real thing". So we embarked on this journey together. I was busy with making a product 'decent' and she covered marketing and design activities in her free time.

Monetization took longer than building. Not technically but psychologically. I needed time to believe the product was genuinely worth paying for. and when in August 2025 the paid version shipped (free is still available), we got 30 subscriptions within the first month! That was a huge relief and motivation boost. Of course there was a bunch of unsatisfied users who expected free usage forever and weren't satisfied with limits, but all in all the experience was very positive.

Today Clarify AI is a full YouTube assistant — summaries, Q&A about the video, timestamps, bookmarks, comment insights and other features. The core hasn't changed though: there's still a free version because accessibility really matters for us.

Numbers so far: first users March 2024, thousands of installs on $0 marketing, paid since Aug 2025, now a two-extension product (we added Screen Answers - screenshot anything on a page and ask AI about it).
