We're building a workspace for client work. Closed alpha, 50 users. This is the conversation that changed what we're building.
I kept asking people about their current projects - what's slipping, what's a mess, how they track it. Useful, but everything I heard was already on our roadmap. Then someone mentioned an old client coming back after eight months, and the tone changed completely.
That message - "loved working together, can you resend the files, and what price did we settle on?" is the best message a freelancer gets. Warm lead, existing trust, no pitch, no discovery call. And it's the one they're least equipped for. Files split between Drive and an external disk, scope buried in a Discord chat, price sitting in an invoice they'd have to go find.
So they spend 40 minutes reconstructing their own work. That's the obvious cost.
That reframed the product for us:
Finished work has to stay readable, not just archived. Archive is where things go to die. A finished project needs to open in ten seconds two years later.
Connect, don't replace. Nobody is moving off Discord because we asked. Discord or Google Calendar or their setup comes first.
The thing I still haven't cracked: the habit itself. Everyone agrees they should write a closeout when a project ends. Nobody does, because at the end of a project you are done, it fails on motivation, not knowledge. Our current bet is that if the record accumulates while you work, there's nothing left to write at the end, that's an assumption...

- Projects live somewhere.
- Client information somewhere else.
- Files in Drive or storage.
- Payments in Paypal.
- Finance and numbers in a spreadsheet.
- Conversations in Discord,emails, or DMs.
And somehow, the freelancer is expected to keep all of it organized?
There had to be a better way to do it...
So I started building Craftingdex with the goal of - bringing projects, clients, tasks, files, finances, invoicing, collaboration and the rest of the day-to-day business into one workspace.
But here's the thing:
We're currently in alpha, we're open to onboard freelancers and teams who want to actually solve the issues of painpoints we covered above, tell us what's useful, tell us what's missing, and help shape what Craftingdex becomes before it launches.

1The tool consolidation makes sense, but which existing workflow are alpha users actually motivated enough to replace rather than just add Craftingdex alongside everything else?

1We’re not asking alpha users to replace one specific tool. Most freelancers already have workflows they’ve built over years, and we don’t want to force them to throw that away. The motivation is having one place to finally track everything - projects, clients, money, work history, etc. We have integrated 6 apps so far.

1That makes the positioning clearer. The interesting test then seems to be whether users actually consolidate anything there, rather than simply keeping Craftingdex alongside their existing workflow. What are alpha users moving into it first?

1Right now, we're doing a closed alpha with a small group of freelancers. We're not trying to force consolidation yet, we're using this phase to learn. As feedback comes in, we're refining the product and shipping features and fixes along the way. Once the closed alpha is complete, we'll add more functionality and open Craftingdex up to a public testing and launch.

2Makes sense. The closed-alpha feedback should give you a much clearer picture of what actually sticks.
