Create interactive product demos in minutes, not days

February 20, 2026 I got quoted $6K/year for demo software, so I built my own - just launched DemoWalk

Hey IH! 👋

I just launched DemoWalk and wanted to share the story with this community.

## The Problem

Last year, I needed interactive product demos for my SaaS. You know, the clickable walkthroughs that show off your product.

I researched the options:

- Navattic: $500/month ($6,000/year)

- Storylane: $40/month

- Tourial: $100/month

$500/month for screenshots with clickable hotspots? As a bootstrapped founder, I couldn't justify that.

## The Decision

Instead of paying, I decided to build my own.

Worst case: I'd have a tool I needed.

Best case: Other founders might want it too.

## The Build (6 months)

- Month 1-2: Core editor + Chrome extension

- Month 3: Analytics + sharing

- Month 4: Edge cases (so many edge cases...)

- Month 5: Integrations (HubSpot, webhooks)

- Month 6: Polish + launch prep

Tech stack: React, TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Supabase, Stripe

Total cost: ~$200 (domains, hosting)

## What DemoWalk Does

1. Capture - Chrome extension captures any webpage

2. Customize - Add interactive hotspots, tooltips, CTAs

3. Share - Send a link or embed anywhere

4. Track - See who viewed and where they clicked

## Current Numbers (Honest)

- Free users: 15

- Paying customers: 1

- MRR: $19.50

- Website visitors/day: ~20

Small numbers, but we're just getting started.

## Pricing

- Free: 3 demos/month

- Pro: $39/month

Running 50% off ($19.50/month) until Feb 28 for first 100 users.

## What I Learned

1. Build for yourself first - You understand the problem deeply

2. "Too expensive" = market opportunity - When incumbents charge $500/mo, there's room at $40/mo

3. Launch before you're ready - I waited too long

4. Audience matters - Launched on Product Hunt -

## Questions for IH

1. How do you approach pricing when competing with expensive enterprise tools?

2. Any tips for building an audience from zero?

3. Would love feedback on the landing page: demowalk.com

Thanks for reading! Happy to answer any questions.

Hey there, Saw your Indie Hackers post about building DemoWalk—especially impressed by the interactive product demos with clickable hotspots, analytics and sharing features. Quick question: How did you validate that users would pay for this functionality? I’m exploring a video verification method for my own project but don’t want to build in a silo. This isn’t a pitch—I’m still in the early stages and would love to chat with a fellow builder like you for 10 minutes to swap validation ideas. Would you be open to it? Jone Xu

Sharp execution on solving your own pain point. The pricing arbitrage you identified ($500/mo → $40/mo) is real, but I'd push you to think one level deeper.

The real opportunity isn't just "cheaper screenshots with hotspots."

It's this: **interactive demos fail not because of tooling cost, but because of adoption friction.**

Most teams buy demo software, spend hours building demos, then realize nobody watches them. The problem isn't creation—it's distribution and context.

Here's what actually drives demo engagement:

    **1. Placement beats polish**

A mediocre demo embedded at the exact moment of doubt (pricing page, feature comparison) converts 10x better than a beautiful standalone demo buried on a resources page.

    **2. Personalization scales retention**

Generic "here's our product" demos get 30-second views. Demos that show *your* use case (pulled from form data, CRM tags, or referral source) hold attention for 3+ minutes.

    **3. Activation, not explanation**

The best demos don't explain features. They remove the activation barrier. "Click here to see your dashboard populated with sample data" beats "here's what a dashboard looks like."

    **On your questions:**

    **Pricing vs. enterprise tools:**

You're not competing with Navattic on features. You're competing on *speed to value.* Enterprise tools sell compliance, security, and hand-holding. You should sell "demo live in 10 minutes." Charge for speed, not parity.

    **Building audience from zero:**

Don't build an audience. Build case studies. Find 5 early users, help them see measurable lift (conversion rate, demo-to-trial, time-to-activation), then document the hell out of it. Specific numbers beat generic "building in public."

    **Landing page feedback:**

Your hero needs a sharper pain articulation. "$500/month is too expensive" isn't painful enough. What's painful is "we spent $6K on Navattic, built 12 demos, and nobody clicked them." Lead with outcome risk, not cost risk.

Rooting for you on this. The interactive demo space needs tools that solve adoption, not just creation.

Hey Rishi, I really enjoyed your thoughtful reply to the DemoWalk founder—your insights on adoption friction, placement over polish, and activation vs explanation were incredibly valuable. I’m currently exploring a method to validate market demand using video prototypes, but I don’t want to build in a silo. This isn’t a sales pitch; I’m still in the early stages and genuinely want to learn from someone with your experience. Would you mind sharing your quick take: do you think this approach is worth pursuing? Any advice on how to test if it’s valuable before investing too much time? Thanks so much for your time and wisdom.

Nice execution. Competing on simplicity and price against enterprise tools makes sense, especially if the core value is fast demo creation.

A few security questions came to mind:

    • How are you handling sensitive data on captured pages? If someone records a dashboard with customer data, API keys, or internal URLs, are you warning or masking sensitive fields automatically?
    • When demos are shared publicly, how are you preventing unintended data exposure? Do you scan or sanitize captured HTML before storage?

Tools like this often end up being used on staging and internal apps. Making your data handling model explicit could become a strong trust differentiator, especially for B2B SaaS teams.

Congrats on shipping and sharing real numbers!
