September 18, 2026 Higher resolution doesn’t always mean a better image

I've been working on Foca Upscaler for a while, and one problem kept coming back while testing low-resolution images:

Making an image sharper is easy. Recovering detail that is no longer there is much harder.

Traditional enhancement can clean up edges, reduce softness, and make an image look crisper. That works well when the original image already contains enough usable information.

But some images are simply missing too much detail.

A tiny face, compressed hair, fabric texture, or a blurred object doesn't suddenly contain more information just because you upscale it 4x.

That was the reason I added Physics mode to Foca.

Foca now has two different enhancement approaches.

Sharp is meant for images where the original structure is already there and mostly needs cleaner, clearer enlargement.

Physics is for images where more detail needs to be reconstructed rather than simply sharpened.

The interesting part is that reconstruction creates a completely different problem.

If you push it too far, the result can look impressive but stop being faithful to the original. Skin becomes too perfect. Fabric gains textures that may never have existed. Small details become sharper, but not necessarily more accurate.

So the goal with Physics isn't simply “generate as much detail as possible.”

It's to reconstruct enough detail to make a low-resolution image useful again without turning it into a different image.

That's also changed how I think about resolution.

Foca supports upscaling up to 16K, but 16K alone isn't a quality metric. If those extra pixels are filled with fake-looking detail, the larger image isn't really better.

For me, the harder problem is finding the point where reconstruction helps more than it hurts.

That's still one of the most interesting parts of building Foca.
