I run a cold email lead gen agency on the side. For months I was paying $200/mo for Apollo to prospect local businesses — dentists, plumbers, HVAC companies, restaurants.

The moment I knew something was broken

I searched "dentists in Austin" on Apollo. Got 12 results. Half had outdated emails. My bounce rate was sitting at 15-18%, slowly destroying my sender reputation.

Then I opened Google Maps and searched the same thing. 247 dentists. All with websites. Most with contact emails right on their pages.

That's when it clicked: enterprise B2B databases were never built for local businesses. They index tech companies, SaaS, corporations. The plumber down the street? He doesn't exist in their world.

The gap

There are ~33 million small businesses in the US alone. Most of them:

• Have a Google Maps listing

• Have a website with a real email

• Are NOT in any B2B database

And thousands of agencies, freelancers, and cold emailers are trying to reach them using tools built for enterprise sales.

What I built

FreshLeads.pro — a simple tool that:

1. Searches Google Maps for any business type + location

2. Scrapes their actual websites for emails

3. Verifies everything via MX records before delivery

No pattern-guessing. No "confidence scores." Real emails from real websites.

Numbers after 6 weeks:

• $100 MRR (1 paying customer on Agency plan)

• 2.4% bounce rate (vs 15-18% on Apollo)

• 200+ leads per search (vs ~12 on Apollo for local niches)

• 50,000+ leads generated through the platform

What I'd tell other indie hackers

You don't need to build a better Apollo. You need to find who Apollo forgot.

Every big platform has blind spots. The more dominant the player, the more niches they ignore because those niches "don't scale" for a VC-backed company.

But they scale perfectly for a solo founder charging $29-149/mo.

My framework for finding gaps:

1. Use the big tool for your actual work

2. Notice where it consistently fails

3. Ask: is this a bug or a structural limitation?

4. If structural → that's your SaaS

Apollo will never prioritize local business data. It doesn't fit their enterprise model. That's not a bug I'm waiting for them to fix — it's my moat.

What's next

• Pushing toward $500 MRR

Quick milestone update!

Closed my first paying customer this week - $100/month on a custom Agency plan.

The journey:

- Week 1-2: Built MVP to solve my own problem (18% bounce rates on local business campaigns)

- Week 3: Posted on Reddit about the problem, got DMs asking what I was using

- Week 4: Threw up a landing page with pricing

- Week 5-6: Engaged in cold email communities, helped people with data questions

- Week 6: Customer found me through a Reddit post, we negotiated, closed the deal

What worked:

- Solving my own pain first

- Free tier (100 leads/month) to let people test

- Being helpful before selling

- Building a feature the customer asked for (multi-location search) before he paid

What I learned:

- Launch faster, build less

- Talk to users more, code less

- First customer teaches you more than 100 hours of "market research"

Next goal: $500 MRR
