Do patents work now? I've just heard a lot of stories about how they are violated and violators can do nothing or almost nothing about it.
So I'm wondering, if my patented idea is stolen somewhere in China, will I really be able to do anything about it?
Patents will only protect you in the jurisdiction where you've filed while helping you establish a priority date. China generally has not respected patents, even those filed in China.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like filing a patent might be worse than doing nothing in some cases, because then everyone has access to your idea, and people outside of your legal jurisdiction can copy it penalty-free, as far as I'm aware. (I am not a lawyer.)
When you file a provisional application it doesn't become public.
Patents can sometimes be useful for reputation and attracting investors, but as a real protection against copying they are very limited — especially outside your own country.
On top of that, filing takes both time and money, so in most cases the effort isn’t really worth it.
