A few months ago, I noticed that some cryptocurrency names sounded pretty indistinguishable from Pokemon names. That gave me an idea to create a non-functional "quiz" on Medium, seeing if people could tell the difference between the two. For example:
Well that Medium post ended up getting over 14k views in just a few days.
That inspired me to build a functioning Pokemon Or Cryptocurrency? quiz website. Not knowing how to code, I used Bubble to create it - making images and answer appear when certain buttons are clicked, showing the dynamic score at the bottom, allowing you to share your dynamic score on Twitter, etc.
I know it looks terrible, but it actually took me a few days and a lot of learning to put it all together. More than anything, it gave me an unbelievably deep appreciation for actual developers. Props to you guys.
I put the site on Product Hunt, and it ended up getting featured and collecting over 80 upvotes. Not bad for a dumb little quiz.
When traffic started coming in, I decided to "monetize" the site by putting a referral link to a Bitcoin faucet I have used before. The faucet is a legit operation, but won't make you a ton unless you hit one of the high numbers (but - hey it's free, so can't complain). I figured I'd throw the link on there and see what happens.
Lo and behold, a handful of people actually signed up via my referral link. Now I'm headed for an early retirement, funded by my Bitcoin nest egg!
JK I've made about $6 from the site so far. Better than a stick in the eye though.
Especially a fan because you did this in Bubble and didn't put yourself through the ringer of learning programming languages, frameworks, buzzwords and AI. Congrats on the $6. Soon you'll have enough to buy a domain name for your next project :)
Thanks Nav, appreciate the encouragement :)
One of the cool things about Bubble is that you can do a lot with their free version. I didnt pay anything for the site I built (thus the .bubbleapp.io domain name).
My favorite part of the whole experience is that now I feel like I can take on more complicated sites using Bubble. There is a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you can do a ton.
Very cool project Davis - thanks for documenting it here.
I've never heard of Bubble but will have to check it out.
Have you written anywhere about the actual process / learning curve to use Bubble? You mentioned above it took you a few days and lots of learning. If so, would love to read it.
Cheers!
