10 examples of productized services you can start today

  1. 5

I too have been inspired by this productized movement!

This week I'm launching Shaun (as a service): https://shaunasaservice.com/, a productized version of my development consulting service, aimed at delivering rapid prototypes to help validate ideas.

    1. 3

Congrats on this Shaun...I love the self branding! Love the idea too!

      1. 1

        thanks! :)

    2. 2

Shaun, do you have a portfolio I can check, would be interested to see what you've made before.

    3. 2

What a great Idea. I love building prototypes! This is the best part of a project. The moment I need to handle edge cases, catching erros, test automation, etc is where the fun stops and I move on to the next one :)

    4. 1

Congrats Shaun! Did you use Carrd for the landing page?

      1. 2

        I didn't, I made it myself :)

        1. 1

          neat!

    5. 1

How has business been since release? Anyone reach out to you?

      1. 1

Actually yeah! Between yesterday and today, I got three great submissions, which I responded to with appropriate package options, and they all seem very eager to get started so hopefully that'll happen soon.

What's been really awesome has been reading these submitted ideas in this 280 character format. It really does get to the heart of what they are trying to build and accomplish :)

        1. 1

That's cool. Where and how did you promote your service?

    6. 1

This is dope, do you have a portfolio?

      1. 1

Most of my work is under NDA, but I'm happy to provide some reference work over email! Send me a message if you're interested: shaun@shaunasaservice.com

@Vinrob just read all of your articles here, thanks for sharing this and also explaining the business model clearly for us to apply!

    1. 2

      Thanks, I appreciate!

  3. 3

    Nice article Robin !

How is Scott Cheap Flight productized ? Is it due to the manual work they do ?

    1. 1

Yup, correct! It is still a service but neatly packaged and standardised so that they're able to offer it as a "product", that way it's a productized service.

  4. 2

What about software development or CTO as a service?

  5. 2

I also have been super motivated by the productized movement in here =)

We've recently launched a technical support as a service (https://palar.support), and we'd love some feedback!

    Hi Robin @Vinrob

Great article and appreciate the progressive way of looking at delivery methods of online services.

Given that the suggestions above mainly relate to web based services, have you explored applying the productized service approach to offline industries? i.e applying a fixed cost to services which have historically had unknown and subjective variable costs. Examples; service to install an electrical power point, undertake a car service or lodge a tax return.

I feel like the current process to source a quote, then select a provider and book the service could be streamlined with a fixed price with defined conditions. Understand there are online marketplaces that facilitate all of suggestions, however, I still think it can be simplified for the benefit of the customer.

    Cheers.

Would love to do a product management as a service.

@Vinrob in many ways this seems like a solution to solve the egg and the chicken problem for marketplaces too. It would be interesting to see how it works at scale.

    1. 1

Good point. I think it will not work at scale very well. This is a good way to jump-start marketplaces, not operate them at scale with.

  9. 1

I just launched "blockchain mentorship" as a service! A small but growing niche https://www.dimpull.com

I just looked at your website, the idea is good. Though sometimes live video is more hassle than messages. Earn.com's model seems more scalable.

It’s occurred to me very recently that things like WIP.chat and mindfulmakers.club( I think?) can be rolled out for whatever community or community mashup tickles your fancy. It seems the model works, if you have the right angle/tribe/community and interest.

Individuals would have their own specialty and group they’re interested in working with but

some obvious general examples come to mind:

    • Brand builders (personal brand building)

    • SEO ninjutsu

    • Marketing warriors

I’m just throwing this out there as food for thought for anyone interested. It’s not my thing, but hopefully it inspires someone. 🙏

For the businesses like manypixels that offer unlimited tasks for a fixed monthly price, what's the likelihood/risk of people abusing the service and constantly requesting tasks?

There are many successful businesses that operate this way but I struggle to understand how the economics work for this type of business model. Can anybody shed some light?

    1. 3

As @Vinrob said in one of his other articles this is called "Creative Destruction" Where resources (designers in Asia) that are not being put to use are leveraged to other areas where they are needed (startup clients in Tier 1 Geos).

In that sense, I think that some of these models (The ones that require more manual labor to scale) Will not be viable if you are unable to get cheap highly skilled labor and ALSO get high currency clients to take advantage of this trend.

If you can't get those resources you are better off creating something like a community.

Many thanks for continuing to update us on your Manypixels journey.

I was inspired by your story, so I've just launched 'Unlimited travel content for your travel start-up or online travel agency for a fixed monthly fee at TripEdge and I would welcome any feedback.

    1. 2

      Hey Robert,

The site is very easy to understand so well done on that. The value proposition is also clear: You create content that travel agencies post on their website, it generates leads which then convert and buy a package.

      Some things I would improve:

      1. Case studies / social proof -- Show what you've done and what are the key results for those agencies

      2. A better UI for the site -- The site is a little bit outdated, there are a ton of modern UI themes that you can purchase from $10-$100 or you can build a site from scratch.

      1. 1

        Hey Robin,

        Thanks for the valuable feedback.

        1. I've added some social proof of travel websites I've written travel content for.

        2. I've updated the fonts and colours for a more modern look.
