100+ app downloads in 5 days - what I have learned

On Sep 1st, I published Maestro, an app to help people learn music. Within 5 days, it has received 100+ app downloads (40+ android, 60+ iOS).

This is a good progress comparing to my other apps, and I’ve learned a few things that went well, a few that can be better.

Android App can be found here.
iOS app can found here.

Identify “task to be done". I developed Maestro with a clear task in mind - music students need to practice music theory. The challenge for this task is that people want to practice wherever and whenever, and people need to be motivated to keep learning music theory because, frankly, practicing sight reading or ear training can get boring sometimes. I believe having a mobile app that allows people to practice in commute or on break makes a difference in their musicianship growth.

Clean press release. For my past apps, I designed marketing webpages and share them across different channels (e.g. Facebook, Product Hunt, Indie Hackers, etc.). This time I wrote an article on Medium explaining what problem the product solves, what features the product has, and what’s in upcoming releases. Readers can get a better sense of the product by glancing at the article, which makes them more likely to download the app.

You can read the medium article here

A/B test marketing channels with intentions. For my past apps, I published one, generic message across channels at the same time. This time I intentionally curate a specific message for each channel, and I schedule to publish the marketing material one channel at a time. For example, the message you are reading now is a curated message for Indie Hackers audience, who are builders and want to share and learn what others have done in shipping their products. The benefit of customizing the marketing material is that I can analyze ROI per channel, and I can improve my customer engagement from there.

Thanks for reading this post, and please comment below for any suggestions or feedback! I’ve learned a lot from this community and I draw inspirations from it constantly 😃

Cheers,

Marshall

Thank you for you inside informations. I am working on a project based on PWA-MPA, my inspiration for my project is from native apps. My question is how do you benchmark your app performance?
