Advice on improving SEO for SEO beginner

My advice for a SEO strategy would be:
Identify your target audience
Find out what queries they would use to precisely find your service. Be sure to think of user intent here: Only address those users and those queries where your site is really a (nearly) perfect fit.
The most important query should be matched by your home page. Matching means that page should be optimized for that query. And optimizing a page for a query means to put the words from the query in your TITLE tag as well as in a header and somewhere in the copy text.
For your other queries try to build appropriate pages that match those queries (and especially the intent of those using that queries).
You should know these classical SEO mechanisms, but always build your site in a way that satisfying your users is your top priority.
Getting links from other websites is great and still helps a lot, but stay away from any link building schemes. A good website with a good product gets links without active link building.
