Ask IH: How to create a great email subject?

I am in the insurance field selling directly to agents.

The company I am niched to has two programs that calculate commission terribly. I have capitalized on this and many people have moved over. I found great success (consistent 30%+ open / click / respond) rate when I created a subject that line said that it improved the company tool. This has started to dry up.

I am currently recording time, subject, body and day to help filter this.

Questions:

  • What are some tips to create a great subject line for people who opened?

  • People who clicked?

  • Should I mention my competitors?

  • Personal email address (mail merges), company email address?

  • Pictures / testimonials work?

Any data would be awesome!

Have you tried asking people directly what made them open your email?

And you could follow up with those who didn't open as well to ask them why not? (response rate will be pretty low I imagine but there might be a lot to learn from people who do reply).

Close.io has a bunch of content on these topics: http://blog.close.io/subject-lines

Email with subject containing emojis have high CTR.

    "Shh🤫.. Don't tell anyone😍 "
