Ask IH: Need help to figure out how to build a job board for indie hackers / side projects

Hey all :)

As many other makers, I'm a freelance dev, I have a fulltime job in a big corporation, and I'm looking to build projects on my free time.

I have one "side client" for which I work ~2 days per month on their product. It's not much but it helps a lot already.

So I was thinking about building a job board to find more jobs like that. Like a job board for side projects exclusively. And only for kinda long term projects. So not for a simple Logo design, but more for projects like "Listen, I want to build this website, but I only have ~$1k per month budget, I don't really care if it takes several months to build. Will you help me or what ?".

Also, that kind of platform would be super cool for indie hackers and freelances to "hire each other". Either cash or equity, for example, to build a side project in a small team instead of alone.

Job posting needs to obviously be cheap but that's fine for me. Or maybe a subscription fee? I don't know.

I bought these domains but I really don't know which one to choose, or if it's even worth it to build such a platform.

What do you think? Sorry for the weird english!

So a platform for long-term jobs that seems interesting!! A forum type design would be familiar something like Craigslist!!

    your English is great!!

Thanks ! Yes I'm thinking about a minimalist design but with enough features to make it interesting.

Ya dude!! If you look at sites for this niche they are all simple designs Hacker News, Reddit, Dev.to... As long as it works!!

One of our IH members who built remoteonly.io might be a good resource for you. He built a very impressive job board for remote only gigs. I can't think of his name off the top of my head.

I love the "Pick your Price" business model ! I wonder if it impacts the place of the job on the listing page. I'll try to contact him 👍

With gig economy platforms, I think long term project relationships are often a standard feature, already ... but maybe not marketed well enough!?

I think you could try to tap into the Flippa sentiment somehow and match individuals who want cash flow in return for a one time investment with makers.

When it comes to matching Makers, then a Mastermind Group that goes for a PayPal Mafia Vibe could be cool. Maybe a portal that matches makers and sells courses for a system where the makers found an organization. Equity is split based on Scrum story points and they work remotely on assets that get more complex over time until each member gets the MRR from the assets that they aimed for. Something like that ... just a database of advertisements probably is too hard to market / establish.

All 3 domains sound great ... but for findamaker.io it might be easier to come up with a great positioning approach than for the others.
