Building a privacy/security/psychology education app. Need your feedback.

Hey guys, I am working on a product called Guardian Goose. I would love your thoughts on the landing page. It leaves much to be desired, but sticking to the philosophy of shipping something is better than shipping nothing, I am sharing my alpha version for initial feedback. Thanks!

Hey Krish - good for you for launching your landing page.

Your landing page is sorely missing some kind of statement about what it is. This is a standard convention that every website follows. I'd love to see something like, "Learn to protect your online privacy and personal data from prying eyes" in 100pt font at the top (above the video).

I don't really want to watch a whole video to figure out if Guardian Goose is something I need / want. (it does look like a high quality video though!)

That way, I can scan within 5 seconds and decide if this is something I want to use.

    Good luck!

    Jonathan

Yeah, I think the page is beautiful!

But if a visitor isn't in the mood (or in a place) to watch a 1-minute video, they're staring at a blank home page.

Thanks Jonathan and Andrew. Great feedback. I will make the tweaks.

Who exactly is your target group?

When I watched the video I actually needed to think of employees of large corporates. They have access to really sensitive data and especially people older generations need to be educated in these areas because their behaviour can be a real security breach.

    However, regarding your landing page:

Is this really an app? Your goal is to educate right? Is an app the right platform then? Do you need any app-specific features?

In general, I think it's a good project but I think this topic is so difficult. I mean, everyone is aware that Google saves every single search, but still, everyone is using Google. Most people just access GPDR notifications, data privacy terms etc. without actually reading them. We somehow know the companies make money with our data and still we're giving our data.

I mean, I think more education in these topics is really necessary! But I could imagine that it will be very hard to market this. The reasons on your landing page are rationale, but I am not convinced yet to use it. But probably I'm also not in your target group.

So, this for my feedback. I think more education on these topics is necessary, but I think you really need to find the people who need this education.

Older people? Really? In my experience, it tends to be younger people who have no concept of privacy. We older ones can actually remember a time when privacy belonged to us and not to corporate entities.

Hmm, yes I understand what you are saying. But I would really test this target group.

There is a successful startup here in Germany which is a B2B learning platform to all related digitalisation topics - which is strongly connected to topics such as security and privacy. Around 6 million euros were invested in this startup. And from my experience with large corporates here in Germany, it's often the older generations lacking many skills and knowledge in these topics.

But these were just some thoughts that came into my mind. If younger people are willing to educate themselves with such products - that's great! Maybe that's a really important target group.

        1. 1

There is a difference between "understanding the importance of privacy" and "knowing how technology robs you of it".

I suspect the older people in your group simply did not understand how vulnerable their privacy was and would have been horrified had they known.

To give you an analogy: my partner is currently very concerned about her 83 year old father's health ... but she lacks the many skills and knowledge in health topics to make him better. He is on his way to hospital now for further investigations into his chest infection.

Concern and skills / knowledge are not the same thing.

          1. 1

"Concern and skills / knowledge are not the same thing." - no, but they are interrelated to each other. And from my experience, older generations are concerned about their privacy but don't have the knowledge and skills how to protect it. I've seen it many times.

"We older ones can actually remember a time when privacy belonged to us and not to corporate entities." - And there is exactly the gap: Older generations are concerned about their privacy, but they lack the knowledge. So my hypothesis is that such a product can be "easily" sold to such people.

I agree that younger generations NEED the education. But exactly what you said, because they are growing up like that and are not so sensitive to this privacy /security topic. That's why I think it could be hard to sell such a product to this target group.

But it's a hypothesis, I have no idea if it's true or false.

Thanks for sharing hat Tobias and Thomas. Valid points indeed. Why an app? Beacuse we would like to provide more features down the road. eg. an extension to have I been pwned, hack/privacy related curated news and more. I want to start with a niche group of users and expand from there. But I am convinced 18-35 year old would find value in this after my preliminary research.
