Epic: By the end of the week, finish an MVP version of a social feed on Indie Hackers, where you can see a stream of posts made by the people and products you follow.
Yesterday: Import previously-existing post and comment data into Stream, and start pushing new posts and comments into Stream as they're created.
Today: Finish importing all user data. Get product updates working in the feed. Get "likes" working in the feed. Show context on posts. Actually link to where the posts were originally made.
Tomorrow: Deploy MVP version. Iron out kinks. Start working on notifications if there's time.
Work in Progress: Here's a screenshot of what this feature may end up looking like in its MVP form.
Epic: By end of August, users are able to view and filter first chapters submitted by other users.
Yesterday: Solid progress made on wiring the mocks, but didn't finish last night. (Smiling) It was an ambitious goal. Finished the Tales - Genres and Types.
Today: Do hope to slam dunk the mocks tonight. Will finish Preferences - Mine and Theirs.
Work in Progress: https://app.happyendin.gs (By the end of this week, I'll be able to share the feed!)
Interesting concept - actually Its quite nice to write such short bursts - engages your creativitiy.
However, Facebook auth seems not to be working (at least for me) - was stuck at the "Terms + Login" Screen...
"Think of us as your sub. We won’t do anything without your permission." -> did not get what you are trying to tell me here.. I am not an native speaker but this makes no sense to me ;-)
(especially what's my "sub" - subconcious??)
Btw. I might have continued with a second chapter but your login wall snapped me back into reality. -> I dont want to login with facebook here. Definetly, regarding the topics and tags you might want to offer two things:
"anonymous" login with just email + pw instead of FB only. Especially if you could have writers for the "fancy" categories ;)
a way to skip "registration" after the first 2-3 chapters... because if I am in the flow, and got into the story myself - I just want to keep writing.
Wow. Thanks for this fab feedback!
re The Bug. Mobile? Safari? Yeah. (Smiling) It's a known issue. If not, do please share your platform and browser ... not a known issue!
Onboarding is still really rough. Since I have a short amount of time each evening to get something done, I focus on building additional features. I spend the weekend bug squashing. And that's next on the list!
re Sub. (Blushing) It's a bit of a risque reference to subs and doms. Think BDSM.
re Login. Another tricky topic. Happy Endings is first and foremost a dating app. (Not yet apparent, but will be once I have some inkling of a landing page.) It's challenging to have a dating app full of anonymous users. (Grinning) But it's also difficult have a dating app when folks are too bashful to login. I've done an initial teaser and for my core audience, it doesn't seem a blocker. But time will tell. For the MVP, I'm going to stick to FB. But for future iterations, I'll definitely include other options. (Side note, using FB login makes onboarding users so much easier! You'll see if ever you get to the Review page.)
I tried to get the user deep into the process before throwing in the FB ask ... is there anything that would make jumping over that hurdle easier/more enticing for you?
Oooh, now I get it ;-)
Bug was on Windows + Firefox, I can try to Reproduce it If you need more Details
I kind of thought it was an app for writers to overcome writers block or something ;-)
Probably you will have some kind of landingpage / explanation In the future
Yeah regarding the Login, makes sense for a dating App but regardless If I am in the process of writing a story - its annoying to be forced a Login ... Maybe allow for skipping it 1-3 times and then force it.?
I think if I see my story grow I want to add an author name / save it. But again, thats from the point of view of writing a story...
Ooh! Haven't tested that combo! Please do reproduce and share any console log errors ... thank you!
(Smiling) If ever you get to the page after the login ... you'll see why it's important to have the author intel upfront. (That's also the gate to ensure the user is 18 +). I'll keep brainstorming. You've voiced a valid concern that I can't afford to ignore!
Sure, you're welcome.
After clicking the FB Login Button I get a "Bad Request" in the console:
from POST endpoint
Great idea and perfect timing. I have end of August deadline:
Epic: Finish and deploy v1.0 of my app, Mexican Train Dominoes, to the Google Play Store (end of August deadline).
Yesterday: Nothing, spun my wheels trying to fix a bug.
Today: Continue to work on said bug.
WIP: I'm about 90% done. I need to finish working through bugs, implement analytics, ads, save game state, and a few more odds/ends.
External or self-imposed deadline? (And welcome to the party!)
Self-imposed. My schedule will get busy with other things the first week of September so while I have the time, I gotta push this across the finish line.
Great Idea ! I'm joining !
I just started yesterday working on my idea :
I want people to be able to book activities such as comedy classes easier. I'm still testing the market. May pivot on the same theme or go on something completely different !
Epic: By the end of the week, I would have to have some people registered on the form via facebook ads, otherwise I'll try to change the ads and maybe pivot the idea a bit. By the end of August it would be great to have like 100 emails of interested people and start from there!
Yesterday: Yesterday I was thinking about the problem / idea / possible solutions. Wrote down things on paper to get started.
Today: I created a flow/funnel that could work for the product, and started it with a simple TypeForm + Facebook ads, to test the initial idea and capture emails.
Tomorrow: I'll have the first results from the Facebook Ad Campaign and I'll probably have to refine my audience to have . something more relevant, I'm not sure what to expect :D. I contacted some people today that responsed positively to my idea and I can call them tomorrow!
Thrilled that you joined!
Are you A/B testing FB ads? If yes, would you be willing to report back which approach was more successful?
Hey!
I didn't A/B test in the first one but I created a new campaign where I changed some stuff (audience), and also A/B tested, so I'll let you know ! First campaign had about 0.8% Link Click-Through Rate, which is pretty low, let's see if I can improve this.
After A/B Testing the ads, I'll try A/B Testing the forms to see if I can get a better completion rate, which stands at 6% for now.
I'm glad to experiment and learn FB ads anyways!
Epic: I want to have sufficiently validated and clarified the problem my idea solves, how to solve it and how to convey the value proposition (at least for a 1.0)
Yesterday: I spent several hours hanging out with someone I met at an IH event who's a potential user and an expert in things related to politics, news and the media. I learned a ton about his needs + pain-points when it comes to following the news, and other avenues to take my core concepts/ideas.
Today: Called a friend who described himself as a news junkie, so I picked his brain about how he reads the news, problems he sees in the media/industry, etc - he had some truly great insights. It was great practice for explaining my ideas in clear/convincing ways, not to mention the new thoughts I had when forced to explain myself on the spot and respond to his questions + ideas
Tomorrow: I'm going to play with Google adwords and ideally set up a few low-cost ads to test some language and my landing page

I'm absolutely always down to chat, my email is ryanjyost at gmail dot com.
Are you referring to https://newsapi.org/ ?
A little pricey, though of course they've already invented the wheel that I've started working on in the background with scraping web pages and RSS feeds.
