Explain what your startup/side-project is about, in under 10 words: Series #3

Hey IH!

This is the 3rd part of the discussion that I first started in February, 2018.

Tell us what your startup/side-project does, in under 10 words.

Also, submit your project to 10words.io (an amazing newsletter started by a fellow IH👉 @luckybamboo).

For those of you who replied to the previous discussions, share your milestones on earlystagenews.com (launching soon)

10words: Discover new apps and startups in 10 words or less

    😉

    1. 1

Your description is 10 words, not under 10 words :D

      1. 2

I had to make some changes from @Adith's post - since I wasn't clever enough to make mine in under 10 words. So it's 10 words or less instead :)

  4. 5

IdeaCheck.io: Validate your startup idea by asking your actual target audience

    1. 2

      10 is more than 9 :P

      1. 2

Haha, you're right, I didn't see the "under 10 words" requirement. Feel free to ignore one word of your choice ;-)

        1. 1

It's a good explanation; the message stays the same even if you ignore any of the words.

          1. 1

            Thanks, Hannu!

    2. 1

I like the idea! How do you get participants? Maybe you could work with the entrepreneur to offer a discount to your participants in exchange for feedback.

This could allow the participant to get a discount and the entrepreneur to get validation in the form of customers (aka $$$).

      1. 1

        Thanks :)!

        How do you get participants?

We're working with a professional survey panel provider who has millions of respondents in 8 countries. The participants are paid for their time.

Maybe you could work with the entrepreneur to offer a discount to your participants in exchange for feedback.

Great idea, I like it! Most of the ideas that are tested on IdeaCheck are at the "concept stage", but in case it's already "live", that would make perfect sense. I'll think about how to best add this to our sign-up flow :)

This is exactly the type of app I've been looking for. I tried to sign up for your waitlist but the "join waitlist" button appears to be broken for me.

      1. 2

Thanks for the feedback, Alex. I am working on that button now, my bad!

I'd love to understand a bit more about your needs, so I sent you an email - I hope that's OK :-)

  6. 4

Writing.AI: Chat about a topic and receive a completed draft.

    1. 1

I find the scrolling of the text box on the home page to be terrible to look at... The text is scrolling one way and the box the other. Might I suggest you just keep the box full size to begin with? Maybe others like it though :)

      1. 1

Thanks for the feedback! I've updated it.

    2. 1

This is interesting idea. Can I know how will you be doing in the backend? LSTMs RNN?

      1. 2

There are several parts to it, each with different approaches. There's a set of domain models (trees, really) for different types of writing, each trained from a number of hand-annotated writing samples.

The heart of the system isn't generating novel content, it's just collecting it from users via prompts and follow-up questions. That's all basic NLP rules for now, but I'll experiment with different approaches for question generation and evaluation in the future.

I'm also training a seq2seq model to learn how to polish the drafts. For this I'm using human copyeditors to do the polishing, as an upsell to users at the end of each draft, and training the model based on their changes.

        1. 2

That's neat. I am working in the same area. I am using chat bot to create a notebook of your learning summary. But it's more of a direct output thing than using any ML, as of now. I was looking into solution for creating texts from chat prompt and I would be looking forward for your launch. Good luck. !

          1. 1

Thank you, and good luck to you too!

Codeacademy for Microsoft Excel to help advance your career. http://gridmaster.io

    1. 1

is there much of a demand for custom excel processing? Like companies that have a pretty standard set of excel sheets and need processing?

      1. 1

So, what we kind of believe at Gridmaster is that everyone would benefit from advancing their spreadsheet skills. We want to teach people so that they can be the go-to person in their company to work with spreadsheets.

It's certainly possible that every company would benefit from custom Excel processing, but there are barriers to that, such as the security of the data that they would be sending off to another service.

Are you the only curator? it seems like it'd get difficult to keep up after some time. Is there a community aspect?

      1. 1

Yes, there is a community aspect to it – I have clearly not done a good job of highlighting it. Anyone can login via Twitter & submit their resources as well.

To give more context, I built this over last weekend and launched it yesterday, there are still a lot of things to take care.

        1. 1

Yea, I noticed it but didn’t understand what I wasn’t logging in for

          1. 1

I have a bunch of changes since you highlighted this issue. Perhaps, can you give this a shot again?

I'm focusing on keeping it a bare minimum MVP. I'll keep improving this as and when I get feedback from audiences.

            1. 1

Oh yea, it’s looking much better. That text made it easier to to understand. THe hot label is also cool. What programming language are you using?

              1. 1

Oh Great! I'm improving on some low hanging fruits before I go for full launch on Reddit, ProductHunt etc.

I'm using Ruby On Rails stack with PostgreSQL database deployed on Heroku's hobby plan. I started with a goal of keeping tech very minimal & more focused on shipping + content.

I'm playing with building an A.I. powered app builder. It lets you build simple apps on your phone, without programming.

I'm just not sure if people are interested in doing that. Would love to hear people's thoughts.

    1. 2

Make all without programming? That's the dream of everybody lol. If you find a way to do it you will be filthy rich.

      1. 1

Maybe not all, but a decent subset (at least to start with).

I'm a long time software engineer, and spent the last 4 years doing A.I. work, so I know how to write this, and it's easier than I thought.

Not really sure people would want it though.

    2. 1

Here are a few products at which you can look for inspiration: http://www.nocode.tech/app-builders.html

A lot of people need automated mobile app or website building. Might help you out to pick a niche to make your product more viable. Easy profitable niches, for example:

landing pages (website or app) - they all follow the same (more or less) five formats, tons of people out there need to make landing pages

restaurants (website or app) - very standard layout and functionality, there are tons of restaurants out there as potential customers, restaurant simply has to load data and artwork, and adjust the colors.

      1. 1

Yeah interesting. I'm probably more in the data collection space (sorta TypeForms, but an app, with camera and barcode scanning and GPS etc).

It's kind of bits and pieces at the moment, but the bits work ok.

Maybe I should post a video of the bits I have and see what people think.

I totally get it that creating another newsletter to add to an already crowded inbox, is a tough sell but I'm doing it to build a strong community before publishing updates on the website. Also, these updates will be original and not be taken from startup and tech websites (but rather submitted by makers or curated by us).

      1. 1

It is definitely a productized service, it is not a software.

      2. 1

I'd say it's a productized service -- our following up, tracking and monitoring is done manually by a human :)
