Getting more people to signup: would this work?

My SEO tool SiteGuru has been live for a year now. I want to make a few changes which might increase conversion, but not without getting the opinion of my fellow Indiehackers first.

SiteGuru is a tool that checks your website for SEO and usability issues: broken links, meta descriptions, pagespeed and more.

Right now, you can check a single page without signing up. You need to sign up to check up to 50 pages. The paid plans allow you to check even more pages.

Lots of people check just one page and don't sign up. I feel the real power of the tool is in checking your entire website, because it helps you uncover those issues you weren't aware of.

To get more users and uncover the true value of SiteGuru, I'm thinking of removing the single page check without signing up: you'll need to enter your email, and you'll get notified when the site check is done.

Fewer people will run a single page check because they don't want to enter their email, but I think the total conversion from visitor to signed up user will be higher.

What do you think? Would you sign up, or would you be hesitant to enter your email?

Hey, I just used your site as a first time user. It seems to have the change you described above, and it's good.

Even though my main intent was to run your tool against my website, forcing me to sign up was actually NOT annoying. The sign up process was just an extra click (where I had to input in an email/password). I have no objections to this because it was a very simple process.

Like you said, if it didn't force me to create an account, I probably wouldn't have signed up yet. Curious, do you have any metrics on increase on signups or decrease in website testing after you made the change?

Site is great btw! Definitely showed some useful SEO warnings for my personal website.

That's right, I've made the change to see what would happen. Glad to hear it wasn't annoying!

It seems most people don't mind. The number of signups increased a lot after I made the change, from 1- 3 a day, to around 10 every day. Pretty happy with that!

      Glad you liked it!
