How I Bootstrapped My Side Project to $6k/Month While Hating Everything It Stands For

  1. 8

You had me a 'Hating Everthing It Stands For' LOL - what a refreshing, honest read. Great work! : )

Man, this is really sobering. Product market fit without product founder fit sounds terrible. It's still incredible to make $6k/mo from anything and to be your own boss, but product founder fit seems just as important if not more important to my quality of life.

Honestly though, this product isn't even bad, there's already tons of garbage in the android app store, if it wasn't your product, it would be someone else's. I wouldn't feel bad about this one bit.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'd love to read a post about how you found and monetized the various niches before you went the Saas route.

    1. 1

I wouldn't be able to remember the exact niches, but it was simple stuff with not much competition on the play store.

As for monetization we used advertisements from Admob.

Thanks a ton for sharing your experience in such great article.

A lot of takeaways for beginners like me!

Thanks, glad to hear that! Hit me up if you have questions / need help.

Is there a list of sample ads and the most frequent advertisers placed in the apps? It might help to make AppyGEN stand out if you show a sample of the kinds of ads placed in the apps.

Here another guy enjoying your history.

Thanks for sharing this one. Really enjoyed reading it.

Hey! Thank you for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it.

      More stuff coming.

'The answer was simple: I had no real experience in entrepreneurship, pricing, marketing or growth. All I knew how to do was build stuff.'

Hah, I'm the exact opposite of that! The tech side is the one I know the less about.

That was a great read, very honest article, liked it a lot. Thanks for sharing!

"In retrospect, a bunch of my worries were exclusively in my head, but that’s what you get when you spend years keeping your work to yourself, convinced that what you’re doing is bad."

One of the most important key point in your story is this, but how do you overcome it ?

    1. 1

I wrote about it, it worked.

This is such an absolutely inspiring and refreshing story! Thanks for sharing.

I wonder, do you think that both the 'share in revenue from users who create something using my service' and the traditional subscription revenue models can be used in tandem in a lot of cases?

It seems quite unique to your products scope and situation!

      Thanks!

Interesting question that has crossed my mind a few times over the past few years. I believe it can only be done if your service creates a new revenue stream for your users.

      1. 1

Of course! The trick now is coming up with those ideas! :D

        Thanks again for the post!

Great story ! It reminds me of crossrider.com, they begun as a tool to create browser extensions, and like them, I believe your REAL potential here is to monetize your users' apps.

    1. 1

Thanks, however, I'm already monetizing my users apps.

I signed up and created an awful wallpaper app in under an hour. It's hard to believe there's much of any market for derivative apps but this is a pretty cool service nonetheless.

Great story and so forthright! I've never seen the Warrior Forum represented so accurately :)

Thanks :D! I'd like to point out that with a small effort you can make some relatively nice looking wallpaper apps.

Great read, thanks for sharing! How are you handling the ad revenue split? Is there a mechanism for it in AdMob?

Good read. Thanks for sharing this experience
