How I Learned From Past Mistakes to Build a Revenue-Generating Product

  1. 7

This was a super great read, thank you! I love your emphasis on reading/doing research and thinking hard about the problem. That is also the approach I took before starting to build, and it reminded me I need to stop and do that again as I'm building to ensure I'm always being as thoughtful as I can about what I build.

    1. 1

Glad this was of help. Thank you for the nice words! :)

  2. 3

I actually needed to hear a bit of the opposite — to be more intentional and selective of where I chose to put my time and energy

This is something I'm only just realizing lately. It takes a lot of time and effort to assess and act in a way that is meaningful, so it's important to choose wisely.

Thanks for the great article and good luck!

    1. 1

And the same to you, cheers! :)

  3. 3

This is pure gold. Thank you.

I’m happy to be of some help! :)

Very nice article. Good going! I share similar views that reading helps a lot and doing it alone simplifies decision making. Will try to read the books mentioned in the article.

Thanks, I hope the reading goes well for you, good luck! :)

It was pretty fun for me to write too, so that's a win-win :)

Hey Guan, good going. Nice to see a fellow SG working towards revenue generating product! Keep it up :)

Your blog ... you using webflow to build? color scheme reminds me a lot of intercom blog which I also read often for product and business education

    1. 1

The blog is running Ghost, with a simple custom theme I made for it. I think I used van Schneider's ColorClaim to come up with the scheme, but I can see the similarities to the one on Intercom. Thanks for the comment!

Very well constructed responses—made for a super enjoyable and insightful read... Almost like you're using a program or something to help you write, hmmmm 🤔🤣

    1. 2

Haha, well thanks for the kind comment! :)

Congrats on successfully launching. Good to see another Singapore based Indiehacker. I'd like to meet more likeminded people in Singapore if you're up for grabbing a coffee some time? Feel free to contact me on twitter or gmail on the same username.

Hey Rory, will do—thanks for reading! :)

I love your UI/UX layout. I'm a firm believer in laying out almost everything in decision trees. Have you or would you consider in building this into an online platform that uses this type of interface to interact with other things?

    1. 1

I’ve not thought about WriteMapper that way before, but that sounds really intriguing — care to elaborate on what types of interactions would you like to see in such a product?

      1. 1

I am in the early stages of building it out. I'll hit you up on twitter.

  16. 1

Also, I think I found a bug-- on Windows, if I double-click a WriteMap file to open WriteMap to edit that file, it opens WriteMap but for a blank new start, not for the file I tried to open. I can however open files by using "Open" from the File menu.

    1. 2

Thanks for the bug report—I will be investigating this!

  17. 1

Hey, I really love WriteMapper and I'm considering buying a license. I'm using it on Windows. The one thing about it that really annoys me is that I don't seem able to control the layout of nodes very much. I started a new WriteMap, made a single root node, then added two child nodes to it. I wanted to have one of those two on the left, with further children going to the left, and the other on the right, with further children going to the right. But there doesn't seem to be a way for me to do this, unless I'm missing it. Just a feature suggestion!

    1. 1

Hey there, there's actually a function for this exact purpose, you can locate the "Toggle Map Layout" option in the menu bar, under "View"—this should do what you described in your comment. You can also use the Alt+Ctrl+L keyboard shortcut to trigger it.

Additionally, you can have this behaviour persist for new WriteMaps by setting the "Default Map Layout" setting in the preferences window, which you can access from the "WriteMapper > Preferences..." item in the menu bar.

That said, I probably could have made it easier to find, I'll look at how I can do this better. Thanks for taking the time to write in with your comment, I appreciate it! :)

Hey man, just wanted to say Thank You for this interview. Got a lot of joy by reading it!

    1. 1

Thanks for the time spent on it, much appreciated! :)

"There's been a lot of advice in Indie Hackers urging people to start by just launching something, anything. I actually needed to hear a bit of the opposite — to be more intentional and selective of where I chose to put my time and energy. The ideal approach is probably somewhere between these two extremes, so you need to be sufficiently self-aware and honest with yourself in order to determine which is the right advice for you."

As someone that has decided to reduce from 3 projects to one in order to maximise the focus I can apply to it, I completely agree, and I feel this topic needs to be addressed more often and at greater length.

"Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne. Game-changing in the way I thought about how to design a business and determine if your idea is any good.

The One Thing by Gary Keller. The most powerful concept on personal and business productivity I've come across.

How to Get Rich by Felix Dennis. The late Felix Dennis himself was worth hundreds of millions, so he knows what he's talking about. Written to be extremely honest and to the point, this book helped me iron out logical inconsistencies in my mentality."

    Thanks for the tips!

      Good luck Duarte! :)

Hey @gx I have been researching the publication industry for a few days now and I think that there is a huge market of institutional buyers waiting for your product. Like universities, news agencies, etc. If you want, I can write to you in detail about the current available softwares in the whole publication industry and who could be your potential institutional buyers... I will just have to copy paste a few pages of my research... Let me know ... i'll do it for free :D

    1. 1

Hey Rohan, thank you for the kind offer! That makes me wonder—how might I be able to reach these buyers? Do feel free to DM me on twitter if you feel it'll be a better platform. Cheers! :)

Wow, this looks like a great product. I may have some big writing projects coming up in June, so I will definitely give this a try.
