How important is a logo, and where to get one?

I have been working on a new idea and need to do some branding for it.

I am curious what others think about the importance of branding, logos, etc. in the MVP phase.

Also curious of any good resources to generate, purchase, or commission a logo at a reasonable price point.

Hey @indecisive I feel it's good to have a nice logo for a MVP phase but it's not very important to focus a large amount of time on branding.

Post MVP you would doing your product's

    Product/Market fit

    Customer fit

    Pricing/Revenue fit

During this phase you would have a better idea about your product and it's branding position so it's best to spend time/money to focus on building a good brand then.

1.Look into colour psychology to make sure you use the right colour for your product's industry.

2.Best to have a typography logo initially for people to remember and recognize your product. Facebook, Google, Airbnb all did the same.

3.You will find a lot of logo generators or you could find some inspiration on pinterest/dribble.

    Hope this helps.

I agree completely on all these points with you, and I wonder what is your strategy to choose colors?

Hi Alex, I wouldn't say I have a particular strategy. I browse sites like LapaNinja to understand the design trends and use colour psychology. If you google image colour psychology you will find lots of resources.

This is great advice, this is not something I had considered. Thank you.

Early stage: don't bother creating anything.

Although I've designed many logo's in the past, I never spend the time creating one for any of my projects at first.

I launched Startup Costs also just without one. I did created something basic to use as an avatar for Twitter. Once it gets (even) more traction—I'll spend some time on it and by then can use that as something to reach out about too.

For a really easy logo to get started, I use one of the these two depending on my level of effort:

    Both have free options.

I always prefer to make the first logo on my own. I don't want to waste my money for the product that is unknown will go or not.

I create very simple logos, and believe, everyone could do it. Just some free or paid photoeditor, half and hour and you have a logo. Even with so low prices as logojoy has it's not practical to order a logo every time when you want to verify your MVP.

I completely agree. I should have been more clear above - I didn not use Logojoy until I was committed to the project long term. Gravit.io is another great free service.

Wow, gravit.io looks very promising - I have never heard about it, thanks!

Hey @indecisive I would highly advise that you go with LogoJoy (https://logojoy.com) to make your logo when and if you get to that point. I personally see a lot of value in branding - if you just use text as your logo you won't stand out. For reference I have used logojoy for https://soccercruit.com

How is soccercruit going for you? Really like your approach with the landing page so far.

Hey @pelhage it’s going well! Just getting beta signups right now as I build the beta version. Hoping to release paid plans sometime next year after I get some feedback and work out some kinks. Plus I still need to build in the subscription integration with stripe.

I got a really decent one on fiver. There's a lot of rubbish and scams on it too though. If you like something from the previews then make sure to google image search to make sure it's not stolen.

In my opinion a logo is really important, it's the first impression someone gets of your brand and if it's rubbish then it can put people off

I have a background in branding and logo design. I'd say a logo is nice to have in MVP.

Personally, I'd suggest skipping it. Branding is so much more than a logo and logos can be time syncs and really good logos can cost you money (and time). There is a psychological effect of having your identity tied to the logo - meaning, it may be harder for you to shift the identity of your product once you've spent time and money on a logo. This can be a hindrance early on if you want to stay nimble. You can always just use either live text, or a nice typeface and call it good. Let the brand expression of the product as it evolves, help with the logo creation down the road.

My two cents... that being said, I often don't follow my own advice and start with a logo AND branding... But again, I have the design chops to create it on my own without trying to pay for and articulate my branding vision to somebody else at MVP.

Edit - I see some suggestions for logojoy etc. That can be a good way to go if you can find a logo that you're happy with for low effort and price. The biggest issue is don't let it be a time sync.
