How to build a startup — without quitting your day job

Thanks for all the datapoints and your success with JotForm is inspirational.

I found the nights and weekends thing didn't work for me after 3.5 years of giving it my best. There are definitely reasons for that and I have figured out what they are. I'm currently investing a year in going full time on indie hacking and the strategy is to basically round out the skills and abilities that I never could address while trying to ship things in my after hours, with the view to either build a ramen profitabile gig inside the 12 months OR (and this is the hedge) build my skills, abilities and software capital to the point where I can successfully research, launch and market things in my after hours. Looking at all of what I have learned since going full time I just never would have learned some of the most important things that I have learned because the incentives were different, the focus was different and going all in has helped me laser focus on the right things.

This is truly amazing and gave me SO much perspective!!

    Thank you!!

Reading this helped me audit my projects and goals and helped me to see where I was putting too much undue pressure. I am going to have to reread this a couple times to remind myself of the greater picture when I feel like my side projects aren't working out or that I don't have enough time...

It also gave me a better appreciation for my podcast! Its messy, but its so fun to do and I always look forward to podcast day. 😁😍

Couldn't agree more the sentiment here; moonlighting is a hedge that allows you to test yourself, your market, and your product without serious risk. I've done it successfully and would do it again in a heartbeat to manage risk of starting a new business. My transition was full time job -> consulting -> full time on the startup as revenue ramped.

Thanks a lot for the inspiration, "So go in without expectations and see what happens." it's the best phrase to me.

Thanks for sharing Aytekin. I'm going through this phase right now where I've become equally committed to both lifestyles. It demands lots of discipline and energy, but the rewards are there as soon as you start building new skills and pushing yourself to new boundaries.

It's a wonderful thing ... to find that one project that you love.

    Good article and very motivational!!

I would just like that it is ok, if this is not the way for everyone though. Some just might not have the energy to work in the mornings or at night. Or some (including me) need longer times in a row to work on something in contrast to some work here and there.

So don't stress yourself, if you can't build a startup on the side of your day job. If it's not for you, but you have the feeling you should be succeeding with your side project it will just add pressure and make you unhappier.
