How to chose a name for your business without getting sued?

Hi, I'm currently trying to decide on a name for my online app, and I have some worries about using names that I will have to change down the line. What can I do to avoid choosing a name that infringes on a trademark?

The good news is that there is an international database of trademarks. You can find it here:

    http://www.wipo.int/branddb/en/index.jsp

Strictly speaking, the site pulls together a number of different databases from around the world rather than being a single database. The point, however, is that it is an authoritative source.

Wow. That's a great resource. Posting here so I have some sort of bookmark I can come back to.

I'm amazed I've never come across this before, great resource!

I've also found this site to be helpful:

Not a lawyer here. Assuming you're in the US, you can do a simple search for current trademarks: http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=4803:tl3mg9.1.1

Sure it's good to select a correct name as I lost a premium domain to whatsApp as they had copyrighted it.
