Years ago, I made a site for creating a certain popular meme and it still gets traffic. 180k images have been created and about a million page views. I've never been able to figure out how to monetize it. I tried nerdy product affiliate links, Amazon ads and AdSense. Definitely not the type of demographic that will pay for "Pro" account.
I'd like to leverage my codebase to make other meme tools but not if I can't figure out how to monetize the demographic.
I guess you are in a similar position that Imgur has been, and to some extent still is. They are trying to solve this situation by pivoting more to a social network with ads. Personally I'm not a fan of this solution and it involves a lot of planned effort.
Some other random ideas I am getting here:
sell merch. let people put their memes on stuff and sell it.
Use the exposure to branch a bit, have a blog or a youtube channel and try to monetise there too.
I have a tool like that as well - golden ratio spiral meme generator: http://golden-ratio.club. I get around 200 uniques per day via organic search and been thinking lately on how to grow it. Perhaps watermarking, hosting the images and generating a share link would bring more visitors.
try to custom sell banners views instead! but you need to determine which audience you have to better sell it. check how 9gag, imgur, ifunny selling ads on their websites.
I think there is a big market for a tool like this, I'd look for writers, copy writers, bloggers. People that write content and copy might be a good market fit for something along these lines.
They also work with a lot of companies on the ads and social marketing so could be a good angle to go down.
How about a keyboard app that let's people put your memes various apps?
Is that iOS specific? I'm on android so I'm not familiar with keyboard add ons.
Very interesting. I am involved with a similar project, with graffiti images and we are just developing our monetization strategy. Drop me a message and maybe we can work out some ideas!
I think there's a massive market in this area if you can reach the right audience. What's the site?
Interesting, do you have a link?
