I run the product http://weekplan.net a planner to help you prioritize your life.
One of the comments I receive regularly is that Week Plan doesn't look good and I really can't understand why.
I would really appreciate if design minded people here could have a look at the product (not the public website but the actual web app, it is free to create an account) and tell me what they find are obvious things I need to change design wise.

Thanks heaps for your help!
To me, the design looks old. Like old windows accounting software.
Here's some more actionable feedback: I don't think there's enough contrast in the design. There's no order in which my attention is drawn because everything is about the same color or size. So it just feels like a page of "blah".
Have you heard of C.R.A.P. design principles? No joke, this is the foundation of "good" design. It stands for "contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity". Try looking that up and how you can incorporate more of that into your design.
Wow, thanks for your feedback.
You see I just don't understand why someone would get that "old" feeling. Maybe it is the light blue background that can be associated with old?
(on top of the other principles being violated: lack of whitespace, etc...)
I think the blue is a big part of it. Colors go in and out of style like everything else. If you could change the main background from a really light blue to a really light grey that might help.
Thanks for your help
Things like, different colors, better arrangement of the layout (more whitespace for example), better fonts for screen, better icons.
Thanks I will review the colors.
Although I am using Arial and Fjalla One as fonts. I would assume they are fine for screens?
Although Fjalla is a google font, it is meant to be used more as headlines. Try find a good and simple font and stick just with one for the all UI. For example Opens Sans, PT Sans or Source Sans Pro, to name a few that work on almost all situations.
